Oncheon and Bird flu

On Monday I took a bus from Busan up to Sokcho in the North East of the country. Sokcho is the gateway to the Seoraksan National Park, where I was hoping to do a bit of walking/sight seeing. Korea is a mountainous country, and the terrain is very similar to the Balkans. My journey took me up the whole of the East coast, almost to the North Korean border, and we never left the mountains. They aren't farmed at all as far as I can see, and they are covered in forests, which makes the country ver...

Happy to be back in Seoul

... know what our plans are, but hopefully it'll involve me taking a shower sooner rather than later! Oh, and some Korean food - I had bibimbop on the plane but that really doesn't count.

My flight to Beijing leaves in 30 hours so it'll be a quick visit in Seoul - I really hope that I'm not too jet lagged to go out tonight! I took these "no jet lag" pills, so fingers crossed that they were worth the $14.50!

Chuseok eve aka. Seoul Day 6

... in the afternoon. When we left the hostel, we immediately noticed a difference on the streets outside, there was nobody there! I never noticed how dirty the streets were until now with no one on it.

We got to the palace with enough time to see it and then meet up with Jeonga. Xian and I were outside taking some photos while Ming went to get the tickets. When we we in, I stopped to take some photos and before I knew it, Ming and Xian had left. *******s ...

Heading into week two..

... we went to Baskin Robbins and I ordered cookies and cream.

Day 5 Friday 9/11

Didn't do much today. Went to go buy more cleaning products. Walked around Lake park again with Maritza. The administrator came over with a worker and allowed me choose wallpaper and new flooring for my apartment. I felt like I was buying a new house. Although there were lots of selections to pick from in the thick book, none really stood out. I ended up choosing a mellow green polka ...

Random musings

Once again, it's been ages since I last wrote! Many updates to be had....

On the surface level, I am settled into my new apartment, after much complaining. The old apartment I referred to as "the cave" because there were no windows and when inside it was like a timewarp- impossible to detect the time of day, the weather, etc. I hated it! And, with no ventilation and air circulation, I was left with muddled scents of smoke and kimchi from my ...

Day 2!

... We met at 9:30 am and left for Yonsei University. We were led into a huge elegant room where we had our crash corse on Korean language and welcome luncheon. The president of the Korea foundation and some of his co-workers gave speeches. The tables were set so nicely and draped in exquisite linens. Korean is VERy difficult! The teacher was very good- interactive. They also gave each of us T-shirts and sun hats. The lunch was absolutely incredible! It was buffet style and ...

The Third Month Milestone

... day. I usually hate oranges, but I find myself buying and eating a bag of oranges each week. The bananas are great. Even in the middle of winter the strawberries were ripe. Kiwis are available everywhere. It goes on and on. I broke my camera! Yes......I had been drinking........heavily. I was just so excited to take a picture of all my new friends that I yanked my camera out of my bag and it accidentally sent it sailed through the air where it then proceeded ...

A Chilly Welcome

... of the international conference that we were attending, which the Koreans were hosting. I'll finally get to see some real snowflakes, I thought as we headed towards the automatic sliding doors, along with other travelers clad in fur coats, thermal jackets, parkas, thick scarves, boots, hats and mittens.

As our delegation stepped into the dark night, Seoul literally gave us a welcome as chilly as that of the immigration officer. But ...

E-Mart and Coex

... the store and their time. We also tracked down an E-Mart!!!! Not as close to us as I thought, but it is totally worth it! An E-Mart is like a Walmart. HUGE variety of Western foods and products. I found Skippy peanut butter and Smuckers jelly! I also found Snickers and Twix! And peppermint tea! I hate the green tea here! It taste like it has been fermented! Gross! And I found lotion! A decent size bottle of Vaseline Intensive Care for ...

Chapter 9- Kindergarten Cop Killah

... who can't make a choice and constantly changes their mind-(**** I learn most of these English words the day im teachin these ***** thanks to the folks at dictionary.com). Then this lil poindexter pipes up "oh I know what that means like a playboy right teacher?". I then proceeded to explain a playboy as a gentleman who frequents the nightclub and tells many different women he likes them but isn't telling the truth. It was as PG as I could get without talkin ...
