Hue is an old capital of Vietnam. The king (also referred to as emperor) at the time (1802 or so) moved the capital from Hanoi so that it was farther from the Chinese, who often invaded/fought with the Vietnamese. Ironically, all of the imperial buildings in Hue look decidedly Chinese in style. China occupied and ruled Vietnam for a thousand years, ending about a thousand years ago.
