The rock in its natural state greys over time as mosses and lichens take hold and after 30-40 years vegetation takes over, so one can see where the more recent lava flows have been by the bare black rock. After we got back we chilled out on the back of Sam's terrace, the Sicilian wine maker and one of our new friends chatting, drinking and watching the sun set over the expansive Mt Etna valley.
