... in Osteuropa unterwegs.
Wo er denn hinwolle: Nida. Wie praktisch! Ob wir nicht zusammen gehen wollten? "Sure."
On our way to Nida we stopped to visited one of the most pilgrimage places I have ever been. It's a Hill of Crosses nearby Siauliai City. People come here, leave crosses, icons and pray - and the energy on the hill is simply amazing.
Nida is a resort town in Lithuania, located on the Curonian Spit. When we visited this ...
... dark at night when walking back, but didnt feel unsafe to me. From the hotel to old town takes around 15 minutes on foot. Most of the way is a shopping street. The old town it self is small and not very exciting, but has some nice restaurants and bars. I had dinner somewhere outside in the city centre, which was very cheap. This being a Sunday evening, it was pretty quiet.
I am going to another beach town, Palanga, 30 min North. Micro busses leave frequently. They appear to wait until full which can be 2 minutes or 40 minutes (like to Nida).
This is a total beach resort. It's pedestrian walk even has Carnival type rides, huge cafes, ice cream everywhere … The crowds dwarf Nida. The beach has a volleyball tournament going on. I do my thing which is to walk ...
... evidently didn't put too much priority on piecing back together the old urban fabric. There is a rather paltry old town huddled along the south side of the river. Somewhat in line with that seen in Minsk though, it does have an artificial air to it and lacks any real "must-sees." The rest of the town is pretty modern and mundane, if pleasant. What's nice is that it doesn't reek of postwar Communist development. While there are a few eyesores here and there ...
Klaipeda, Lithuania xerius... 5 Litas (£1) to take photos but I am not sure how they can keep an eye on a crowd of several hundred people snapping away. The second day I headed off to the southern town of Nida home to the Parnidis dune. Here is where I climbed the 50 m dune to catch a glimpse of the Russian country of Kallingrad a mere 3 km away. Nida is also a great place to rent a bike ...
Klaipeda, Lithuania sd0744... t really done that) and doing some good old bonding. I am actually really amazed at how quickly we have all bonded and really become almost family like. It is so much fun and I really like everyone here. I can't say to much bad about anyone which is nice for a change. Well its 12:05 here and I still have to shower and write in my journal and touch up on some economics before bed so I will write more as it goes along. Enjoy the burg and Chi-Town and keep me informed!
Klaipeda, Lithuania jcarlso2... how important food is in my world!). I had a plate of yummy goulash, it was different this time, almost creamy and with dill, and a heaping salad. Two thumps up and I was nice and warm! Went back to wait for the bus, the driver was sitting outside of it at the stop having a beer. Made me giggle. I made friends with a French couple, Helen was a student in France and Ben was working in Minsk so this was her trip to visit him. Got the bus and ...
Klaipeda, Lithuania lindsaymKlaipeda So we caught a morning bus to Klaipeda in Lithuania. This place was written down in the book as heaven on earth, so we thought we have to go there. We arrived and checked out the tourist information office. Eager to head over to a place called Nida, which is on this sand dune Curonian spit thingy. The accomadation was either booked out or way too much. Which was a bit disapointing at the time. Anyways we ate lunch at the square where I realised that this town used to be called ...
