... The Japanese are absolutely lovely, cannot say enough about how welcoming and helpful they are. We grazed on local specialties including our new addiction the Oyari bun and of course had to have chestnut ice cream though it was pretty mild in flavour. Rod went on a mountain bike ride while I tried a variety of teas, one of which was quite awful (seaweed I think), and the other was dried Sakura flower which is cherry blossom, but not to ...

... tub or having fun with the lady monkeys, it would be a no-brainer.

It was a little over 20 km from the train station to get to Yudanaka and the snow monkeys and I took a route that ran up by the side of the mountain and through fields of fruit trees. The view of the valley below and the mountains rising sharply above it was gorgeous.

... Walked down to Shibu onsen. People walking from bath to bath wearing Yukata and Japanese shoes. Finally made it back to the ryokan. Put on our Yukata and shoes and walked to a nearby onsen. It was very hot, could only put legs in, Philip squirted cold water on us to help . Went for dinner , then back to the ryokan. Tatami and futons, tiny rice filled pillows. ... The parade is accompanied by musicians in traditional Japanese costumes, quite an interesting and colorful event. The elephant made of paper is very large and being pulled by the boys with help of adults. We watch them parade around the Yubatake and go up the old, stone staircase to the Temple. We take a closer look at the Yubatake where the water gushes down day in day out, 4.000 liters of hot water per minute!
