... hairpin bends the road hugs the edge of a massive cliff. Much of the road is now under massive concrete covers and protected from falling rocks and snow but looking at the construction of the original road here is just a miracle to say the least.

Today much of the road is held up by concrete pillars but on close inspection one can see all the old packed shaped rocks built up and carefully fitted under the road. What a job that must have been to build all this ...

Well we made it. After finding our way out of Innsbruck, we climbed for 36 kilometers to the summit of Brenner pass and over the top into Italy. All in all it was a good first day. Total distance for the day was 67 kilometers. Bikes are working well and we are settling in. We will see how far ...

... br> parallel to the main motorway (which appeared to be elevated on concrete piers
most of its route). The motorway was busy and even the local road was busy, Not
pleasant driving. This is a main north-south arterial route.

sanitary facilities and a heated outdoor pool, but somehow we did not like it.
Full of Germans and very “ordered” parking.

Rain was forecast for the afternoon, so I was out on the bike as soon as the morning mist had lifted to do half a dozen more passes on a 160 km loop, with a coffee stop at Rocca Pietore and lunch at Cortina (the "birthplace" of that nondescript but popular car the Ford Cortina). The tops of the highest passes were shrouded in cloud and the last 20km were in light rain but it was a great ...

WW1 again - but in the mountains

      ... then upwards, broadly
under the cable car route up to Tofana di Mezzo (3444m). This is a three stage
cable car and we only walked up a little beyond the first stage, where there is
a restaurant (Refugio Col Druscie) and an observatory. Beautiful autumn crocii
in the meadows on the lower slopes of the walk.

We had lunch a little higher, at a closed chair lift
      station ...
