Good grub in Hong Kong and lots of steps

After a great time at the Antarctic centre in Christchurch we got a late flight out via Auckland. It was almost full and not much sleep was had overnight. However transport in Hong Kong is good and we soon found ourselves on a bus into town and off it again along busy Nathan Road where our hotel is. They let us check in early after brekkie and we decided to tay awake after a shower and head out to explore, taking in the Star Ferry and then climing a huge number of escalators on Hong Kong Isla...

Day 1-2 Hong Kong

The adventure starts here! Somehow we found time to go out for breakfast and to buy a last minute couple of christmas presents before heading home to finish packing. The trip started at Manchester Airport with fairwell coffees with our parents before we boarded an almost empty BMI flight to London Heathrow. Had to leg it to terminal 3 where we were offered 600 quid to transfer to a flight via Tokyo as the Cathay Pacific flight was overbooked. Had we had more time to check in we woud have seri...

Day 3 Hong Kong

Day 3 we arose quite early and again headed to the safety of Mcdonalds for breakfast. We headed off towards the Harbour to catch the ferry over to Hong Kong Island. Every street corner came withan offer of a wool suit or a bag or a watch. The views from the Harbour were very impressive. For $2.20 (about 20p) we crossed the water on a 'star ferry' and headed up a very steep hill towards the Peak Tram. Sarah discovered a bit of a strange toilet which involved a hole in the floor! We stopped off...

Day 4 Hong Kong

Whilst I was posting my first journal entry in the strangest of internet cafes. I was sat inbetween 2 real life ladyboys who were making arrangements to meet someone later that night at The Sheraton Hotel and charge them about $300. They then proceeded to receive messages from loads of different people not sure whether they were male or female and filling in there diary for future meetings!!! Went to watch the Derby which was a good experience as we won!!!! Had some mexican for tea. Wore my U...

People, Peaks and Peking Duck

We were booked on the "City Highlights" tour, (operated by the same tour company who forgot us at the airport) with commentary by Billy the Kid. We got off to a late start and an overcast morning meant the tour had to be reversed, allowing time for the fog to clear off Victoria Peak. After passing through the unbelievable opulence of post British rule with befitting social comments from BtK contrasted by the incredible slums of matchbox high-rises, we were deposited at the Jumbo Floating rest...

Hong Kong

To get to Hong Kong we fly from Kathmandu to Delhi, with a 4 hour wait, then onto Hong Kong. We get delayed at Delhi airport for over 5 hours, problems wih a fuel pump we are told. We are fed a Subway to keep us quiet. We eventually get to Kowloon and arrive at our hotel at 5am! Feeling sorry for the tired messes in front of them, the staff upgrade us to a suite. The kingsize bed and 2, yes 2, 42 inch flat-screen TVs greet us. We are asleep before our heads hit the pillows. What feels like a ...

We stayed at the Nathan Hotel twice this year.

- Convenient location (e.g., close to MTR, Temple Street night market, Jade Market, etc.)

- Polite English speaking staff.

- Clean and comfortable rooms.

- Bargain price (e.g., we purcahsed a hotel/air/shuttle bus vacation package deal).

- Free maps of Hong Kong in the lobby.

We highly recommend staying here.

Nathan Hotel - Brand New Looks

from peanut001
We just came back from Hong Kong staying at the Nathan Hotel from 01 to 07-Dec-2005.

Nathan Hotel has just undergone an extensive renovation from the external facade to the internal rooms, carpet, wall, toilets etc. We booked a triple standard room and was given free upgrade to superior room upon check-in. The room is really very huge (44sq.m) by Hong Kong standard and there are three single beds for each of us. The toliet has double sink with granite top and the shower with bathtub provide us with excellent shower with very good water pressure. An absolute plus point for a 3-star hotel.

The control panel next to the bed is fantastic and high tech. It does not only control the usual stuff like lights, air-con, radio, volume, time, etc it also let you indicate whether you wish to have the room "to be made" or "do not disturb" light sign to be shown next to the door bell.

The room also has an electronic safe( a must for us ), mini-bar, electric kettle for making coffee or tea. Neither the room nor the corridors has any smoky smell. I noticed the carpets is also very new and clean. Even the lifts have brand new looks.

The chambermaid did a very good job everyday keeping our room clean and neat. The front reception check us in and out efficiently without any fuss. Courteous bel boy greets us everyday too.

The location of this hotel is great. Jordan MTR is only 5-8 mins walk away. Airport Bus A21 (HKD33) stops a few doors away and numerous public buses stop just outside Starbucks adjacent to the hotel, very convenient to travel around. Jordan and Tsim Sha Tsui MTR is very near to each other. In fact this location we felt we were already in Tsim Sha Tsui as we walked along Nathan Road Road. There are so much to shop, eat and explore. If you prefer just hop on to any buses ( approx HKD4-5) that are going up to Star Ferry direction, and just 2 stops away you are right in the centre of Tsim Sha Tsui. Althought Nathan Hotel Entrance does not faced Nathan Road directly. I felt that it is located directly at Nathan Road because it is at the corner, just a turn after Starbucks. If you are lucky you may even get the rooms facing Nathan Road.

Overall we had a wonderful stay at the Nathan Hotel and we made the right choice. This is our first trip to Hong Kong and it has defintely made our trip a very memorable one.

P.S.

We did quite extensive reasearch on hotels in HongKong before our trip and due to our bugget and location preferance, Nathan Hotel is our ideal choice.

We read horrible reviews about other Hotels having smoky rooms, dirty carpet stains, noisy disco, rude staff, small rooms, choke sink, etc.

We are lucky and glad to have chosen Nathan Hotel.

Great Hotel near Temple Street

from amykang
I had stay in this hotel for 8 days, very comfortable, Staff are nice which did give me a few suggest where should i visit and how to go by the easy way, Room are quite big as travel with my husband and son, still have enough room for my boy to move around, and the room also come with a intelligent modern contraption to control everything in the room, due to my job i was use their wireless boardband is very fast and easy access. and is very near to temple street other than the lift is slow and the breakfast buffet menu is the same everyday, overall is value for money.

Excellent hotel

from fluffypurples
The Nathan Hotel is a super hotel located right on Kowloon`s main Nathan Rd. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and immaculate with attractive furnishings and high tech equipment. The bathroom was roomy and again spotlessly clean. The rooms looked as if they had recently been refurbished and decorated as everything looked so new and fresh.

The restaurant is spacious and bright and the staff attentive.

Book through directrooms for great rates. As a Hong Kong veteran I would thoroughly recommend the Nathan

Great Hotel - Good price

from jp7541
This hotel is a great place to stay. You can get some real cheap deals for the rooms.

The rooms are in good condition, with a fantastically modern contraption to control everything in the room, from the lights to the electronic do not disturb sign.

The bathroom was very clean. Our bath took a while to drain, but suspect they would have remedied this if we ever got round to reporting it.

If you want to use the gym, its small with limited equipment, but its again very clean.

Location-wise, its close to all that Nathan Road has to offer.

Would definitely stay here again without hesitation.

A Very Pleasant Hotel

from BerkeleyBabyBoomer
We stayed at the Nathan Hotel on Nathan Road in Hong Kong during the first week of March and had a very pleasant time. It was a very quiet hotel on a very busy street, although the entrance is on a quieter street. It was very convenient to the street markets (Temple St., Jade Market, Ladies Market) and department stores. There's a Starbuck's on the corner and very central to the subway. It is however, not on the free shuttle route for the Hong Kong Airport Express train when you exit for Kowloon. You need to take a taxi a short way to the hotel. On the way back to the airport, we found it cheaper and more convenient to take a taxi for the three of us directly rom the hotel. The hotel has been remodeled and the rooms are in great condition. My adult daughter, husband and I had three single beds in a room which was quite spacious. Our rate from United included a hot breakfast each day but did not include the tax and mandatory 10% service charge for the room. The front desk will exchange your US dollars into HK dollars but the Bank of China down the street will give you a better exchange rate. The ability of the front desk staff to speak English varied but generally you can get what you want.

Good deal for a budget

from A TripAdvisor Member
Nathan hotel has recently been renovated from a traditional chinese hotel into an art deco type hotel. The room is small but enough room for two people to stay in. There is no pool and the gym while small is adeqate. The travel service desk provides adequate information but cannot help beyond providing maps and giving basic information. The service at the front desk was poor, one night we lost our key and they gave us a really hard time about getting a replacement key (and it wasn't for security reasons). The surrounding areas has lots to eat especially with it's proximity to the night market. The MTR (subway) is about 7 to 10mins away far enough to tire you out after a long day. Over all, Nathan hotel is a good buy for the cost, however, if you want more from a hotel like better service, bigger bed or even better proximity to the MTR I suggest you do more research.

The Nathan was being renovated while we were there. The only inconvenience this caused was that there was just one lift operating. The room was clean, quiet, comfortable and quite large by Hong Kong standards. Staff were efficient and polite. Excellent value for money. Very near major shops, night market, MTR. Airport bus stopped very close to this hotel. Recommended.
