Day 13 An 8am start this morning for our 284km ride today. Once again we had a cold and wet day to ride in. Todays destination is Olomouc which according to legend is one of Moravia's oldest towns and was founded by `Julius Ceasar. In fact it did not come into existence until the 7th century, when it was a major centre. ``in 1063 it was made a bishopric and in 1187 the capital of `Moravia. It;s university was founded in 1573. From 1655 the town became ...

... on for about another hour to our final stop of the day in Olomouc. Along the way we had a brief nap (Sophie was seriously catching flies - wish I'd taken a photo!) and also got to know loads of new people. The majority of the people on the tour are female Australians who all seem really lovely. ... a small creek. It was pretty enough, and there were a couple of narrow winding roads up to the church. I was mostly impressed with how hilly it was, I had not gotten the sense that there was much of any topography from the pictures on Google maps, but the town has a fair amount of vertical. It also has a large church on top of the hill, unfortunately it was built in 1889 and most of the graves were from the 1900's so no luck finding any Czerkauer's ...

... a number of face lifts over the centuries - Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque. The current facade of the 1950's reflects communist social realism and instead of the usual parade of saints, the figures are the average worker: miner, farmer, athlete, scientist, housewife etc. The chimes are two men striking an anvil with a pick and hammer but the best part is the end where a golden rooster mounted in the centre of the clock crows and flaps it's wings. It's hilarious and Jack took a video.
