... tennis and more all you can eat buffets... the 3 pilgrims seem to be living on piles of bacon and sausage each morning. We spent our first day visiting a church that our church has a partnership with and serving lunch at their soup kitchen. The kids were so into it and seemed so happy to be doing something good. After having so many meals served to us, we all felt good serving others. Day 2 was spent touring the colonial zone. The ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic explorerjones... Baseball players have come from the Dominican Republic, with Sammy Sosa and David Ortiz as just a small example. There are six national teams, two of which are here in Santo Domingo. The season just started last week so baseball fever is alive and well. In preparation for the game, I was warned to wear long pants and sneakers to protect against flying beer, and to be careful of "los fanáticos locos," which you can probably understand means "the ...

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic maisongautreaux... comfortably. Me, I´m still muddling my way through simple words and phrases. Oh well I´ll get there. We got a taxi into town, some 12 kms away. Sarah wasn´t too pleased it was going to cost $35 US to get there after she read somewhere it should cost half that but we got in and motored our way towards Santo Domingo, the biggest DR: city. We could see it in the the distance and in the twilight it looked beautiful. The motorway ran alongside the coast where palm trees ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic couplakiwis... which we weighted to the roof with rocks and tied down at the other end by flinging a weighted cable over live power lines. Nobody except me and my fellow Americans seemed concerned with the live power: apparently the Dominicans have a fairly laissez-faire attitude towards personal safety. After setting up and assisting at (read: standing around at) the village clinic, we finally got our chance to do some exciting stuff. We could either go to the local orphanage and play ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic deepfnord... only 8 people showed up. My favorite community is also the poorest. But when I had my community diagnostic presentation, more than 20 people showed up. Then I had my first youth group meeting and over 30 kids showed up! The people there want to work with me, and I can actually maintain a conversation with these people, unlike those in my own town. The people are just united here and make me feel like I am needed and wanted, unlike the current village I live in. So after ...
Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic serina300... in beautiful costumes, parading and running down the streets, beating the **** out of every woman's backside with a cow bladder (which is actually now a nerf-type empty thick rubber ball decorated, but still hurts like hell!), being trampled mercilessly by people trying to avoid these overgrown jerks beating them, and tons of little brats with said cow bladders who were thrilled at the idea of being able to hit adults and pay no ...
La Vega, Dominican Republic lisalew... her! She had gotten my email finally. I walked in the resort finally, thought the guard didn't see me. I luckily had 30 minutes to chat and hang out with Leah until the next bus came . As I was leaving, the guard saw me and began to shout at me, asking how I got in. Also, since he hadn't seen me with my bags before, he assumed I had entered and stolen someone's luggage. He started to yell at me and say he was calling the police and went to ...
SD, Higuey, Punta Cana, El Seibo, SD, Pimentel, Dominican Republic lisalew... all such a sense of pride and accomplishment to be Peace Corps volunteers when otherwise we often feel down and as if our contributions go unnoticed and unappreciated. The medical staff and staff of ILAC not only gave hope and well-being to the Dominican and Haitian people needing surgeries, but to the Peace Corps volunteeers as well. You can find out more about the ILAC mission and see more photos on this website: http://www2.creighton.edu/ministry/ilac /
