Between 1405 and 1433, during the Ming era, Chinese Admiral Zheng He,
who was also the court eunuch, commanded seven expeditionary voyages as
far away as East Africa and Middle East. These expeditions, known in
Chinese history as the treasure voyages, consisted ...

Sunday afternoon I hopped on a super high speed train to Nanjing, about an hour and a half journey. I even lucked out and scored a window seat so I was able to nap for some of the trip! I met up with a friend from onboarding who is teaching at an adult school there, Jay. We had noodles at a restaurant near his school before taking the bus to his apartment. Unlike myself Jay has a TV in his apartment so we watched the sports channel and ...

included a huge meal,a packet of cigarettes for every guest(!), lots of
          red ...

... the street with their decks of cards. Our second tourist experience was the city wall which dates back to the Ming dynasty (the last of the feudal dynasties to rule from Nanjing) - our main focus was the Zhong Hoa gate. The wall is vey thick and 35 kms in length. It was used to attract intruders who found themselves trapped between lowered gates and victims of hot oil treatment and other atrocities.

Food here hasn't been too bad either. Today's ...

          Fear and Loathing in Nanjing

Before we get onto fear and loathing in Nanjing....some good news first. We were delighted to learn IRELAND BEAT FRANCE on Sunday which incidentally is our fifth straight game in which they have not beaten us. That means we move on to play Argentina in the Quarter Finals followed by Australia in the Semis should all go to plan. Lizzie was sad to hear Wales lost to Australia which means they have a tricky game against South Africa to come. As you know I did ...
