10/05/06 Up early for the border crossing, went to the Thai passport control then got a water taxi across the 100m width of the river to the Laos side. Take a town in the countryside nestled amongst limestone cliffs darting out of rice paddies with a beautiful clear river flowing amongst the peaks. Add some restaurants, bars and a few hostels/guest houses. Had a crazy day yest**day - went tubing down the Nam Song riv**. Its a backpack** institution and the main reason most people are in this town. Most fun I've had for ages - met loads of people who'd gone 2 or 3 days in a row they enjoyed it so much. You pay the guys $3.50 and they drive you a few miles up the riv** with a tractor inn** tube each. Tubing in Van Vieng!!!!!!! Best day by far!!!! We had a 6 hour bus journey to Van Vieng but everyone was so excited to get there as we knew there was so much fun to be had!!! Finally got moving from Vientiane, up north to Vang Vieng. We found lovely huts by the Nam Song river for $4 a night, lots of ants and spiders but we survived them. We didn't expect much in Vang Vieng but we really enjoyed our 2 nights. Its a really beautiful part of Laos the scenery is amazing and there are lots of caves you can explore, we didn't, but apparently they're nice.
