Vilnius vs. Kaunas

Eure Martina
A Small Something to Cuddle

Our hostess in Kaunus, Laura, made us very welcome. Her parents-in-law and Grandmother also live there. The kids, particularly Saskia and Eartha went out of their way to endear themselves to everyone. They miss Grandma, so a surrogate set of grandparents was not to be passed over. Nick was well fed before Laura took him to the airport. I ...

Getting Lost Again

... up Nick. Still, I was pretty pleased. I'd driven through two time zones in less than a week. How cool is that?

Somewhere in Alytus, I missed the turning to Kaunus. Several kilometres later, I stopped in a tiny village, inhabited by farmers. Dodging the chickens, I asked for help with the directions. The old man I'd picked on, pointed back the way I'd come, made signals that it was two somethings away - kilometres, turnings, traffic lights? Who knows? Eventually his ...

Another Castle

... at us, as we were the only tourists around. Oh well, we just got on with it. In the old part, there were some Germanic buildings but we wanted to see the old castle. The pictures I had seen were great, but then again, photos do lie !!! All there was left was a turret !!! Surprisingly, in the centre of town was a Mosque. There use to be a sizeable Muslim population, but they ...

Kaunas, August 17, 2005 - Wednesday

... Lithuania, and one of the two that Kaunas was lying on. I later found out it was Karaliaus Mindaugo prospektas and it was visible from everything that in Kaunas, too, streets were named after usual suspects, the sods of the Gediminas, Mindaugas and Vytautas variety. Soon we found ourselves in the Old Town, in an enclosed yard, and I was taken to a first-floor apartment of one of adjacent buildings where the room for the night was waiting for me. An elderly lady opened the door. We ...

... doesnt try and make me eat it! she opens up her mouth to reveal a startling lack of teeth which i think she tries to tell me is a result of not eating enough meat. i feel really bad about not having what she made me but i really can't bring myself to eat meat for the first time in nearly 10 years. so bless her she boils me a couple of eggs instead and we have a chat of sorts. well as much of a chat as you can have when neither of you speak the others ...

Kaunas

... to sit awhile by the lakeshores but the best places were taken or full of rubbish. Plenty of people were sunbathing on the sandy stretches. A nice escape from the city, just 15 minutes away. I walked up to the monastery trying to work out the way in. An amazing building just superb. It has had a changing history too. The soviets weren't fond of religion so changed buildings into other purposes such as this was a hospital. I wanted to ...

Walking in a winter wonderland

... the middle of a lake in what, believe it or not, used to be the capital of quite a powerful empire? Well, Trakai obviously hides its past well, very well, and today it's nothing more than a sleepy one road village lined with karaim houses and churches. Which is good, because it makes it hard to get lost. The wanderers Myself and Henk were dropped off the bus from Vilnius at one end of town and we made a democratic decision to follow the ...
