... There was some discussion about our route to the centre since we had left the street map behind so we followed the inside of the moat (actually a twenty feet high mound) until we happened on the food stalls. They were spread around the main crossroads of the old town near the market, probably around fifty stalls and every one cooking like mad. Locals were turning up on bikes, scooters, foot and in cars, mainly to purchase a carry out to take home. The sight of a ...

Chiang Mai

Travelled by boat from Koh Tao over to Chumpyon, then bus to Bangkok, then train to Chiang Mai. Train not very comfy and foot rest in front broken so squeeky/shakey sound all the way. Other than that slept most of the way and only woke for sandwich breaks. Arrived night time on the Saturday. Got to some accomodation near Tai Pai Gate. Fantastic! Nice room, masseeeve fan, roof on the bathroom (always a bonus here), hotel great ...

Itinary : Bangkok - Ayutthaya - Chiang Mai Date : 27th September to 29th September Mileage so far : 3072 km Yes! Kevin finally got his Iran visa so we can now get out of Bangkok and head north... His visa was ready at 3 pm and we were suppose to leave the next morning but I pushed to leave straight away from the Iran embassy to Ayutthaya and spend the night there instead. Like that we can get out of ...

Chiang Mai - kickboxing, bazaars, mountain temple!

We arrived in the morning in Chiang Mai. I needed a good stretch, as sleeping on a train bed is not the most comfortable of things - there was a lot of cracking of body parts as I was doing this, which made a couple of the girls jump! The hotel was basic but comfortable. Everybody decided that a Thai massage was a good idea - I went for the head/foot massage, as I'm not too keen on massages. Even that was quite painful, and left me feeling sore for the rest of ...

Arrivee a Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai (arrival in)

Yo. So, after a FREEZING cold overnight bus journey from Ayutthaya, i arrived in Chiang Mai tired, but alive! I was sitting next to an Australian guy called Shaun on the back seat and i was quite lucky as most of the other people on the bus seemed a little lifeless! It was the same bus route as when I accompanied Stu to Ayutthaya in the furst place, and that bus by comparison was full of excited chatter, movies and laughter - and ...

Home Away from Home

... village called Ban Boonyuen. Gene and Mary had left us in the good hands of their son Allen and his fabulous wife Jasmine, along with their three sweet sweet young girls. And, to our great benefit (as it turns out), we weren't the only guests...Allen and Jasmine were also hosting Peter Schmid and his wife Noot (more on them in a minute). And with no extra "room at the inn" the Longs had arranged for us to stay overnight with a Hmong family in a ...

In a longtail boat up the Kok River to Chiang Rai

From Thaton, we journey along the Kok River in longtail boats towards Chiang Rai. At some times of the year, we may need to travel by minivan due to the low water level. The trip along the Kok River allows us time to enjoy the hilly surroundings and look out for small villages, which are home to various hill tribe people. We overnight in a comfortable and centrally located hotel in Chiang Rai town.

... liked the place. I dansed and made friends with some 19 yr olds! I found out that I cannot keep up with them when it comes to drinking! They kept handing me full drinks and I kept saying "mai dai mai dai" which means "can't can't" but I did. At least I didn't end up dancing on the tables like Jolene and Angela!!! The next morning, we rolled out of bed at the crack of 1 and proceded out into the daylight ...
