Ralph Bunche Rd Nairobi, Kenya
My plan was very clear. Gotta check some local tour operators in town. Get my Yellow fever shot. See the sights. And find an alternate place to stay. We took the side street to the main road and hopped on the CitiHoppa. 30 shillings to town.. not bad. Anne told me how Zipporah had cornered her and told her she couldnt just go around making friends with anybody she bloody well felt like. This is business, warned Zipporah menacingly. And you're ruining it. Wow! Pretty cut-throat. I had never mo...
Nairobi, Kenya adriftOk, so arriving in Nairobi: My luggage was lost, and currently I have no clothes, and my ride was missing and was bombarded by several "taxi drivers" who insisted not for me to go with the others because they were trying to rob me. I felt the adrenaline pumping and the anxiety rising. Some guy in a suit handed me a cell phone, and insisted he was from Backpackers, the hostel I was staying at. On the other line, was Georgina, the girl who was supposed to pick me up. And normally, i wouldn't ha...
Nairobi, Kenya amandasfDay the Twenty-second - in which we mostly sleep and nothing of interest happens. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Got a taxi to the Nairobi Youth Hostel. Pretty pricey, especially as there was no hot water. Nairobi is overcast and chilly. Cold shower - brrrr! At least we feel clean now. Heeding warnings about Nairobi [or Nairobbery] we walked into town with nothing on us except what we needed to change money. It seems safe enough to me. Sure at night it's probably not, but during the day everyone around seems...

Having been to Kericho and Mombasa, I returned to Nairobi for one final night before leaving for Johannesburg. This list is short and sweet as I was only there for one action packed day and night!
In no particular order…
Best Bits:

I am going to have my own room in the hostel but its right in the center of the girls' cubicals. There ar...

... cooked dinner for the family this week. Our menu- red bell peppers stuffed with rice, kidney beans, corn, tomatoes, onion, and garlic with side dishes of cucumber, tomato, and onions w/ Italian seasoning, and chips and homemade guacamole. I have to say, it was a bit challenging to figure out a meal with no meat, no cheese, no oven, and ingredients that can be found over here, but we did ...
Nairobi, Kenya robynkelleyToday (Wednesday, July 01, 2009) we went to Cana in the Mukuru slum, a school/clinic/orphanage that Emily has volunteered with in the past. It was a great day! We mostly just played with the kids and set up a time to return and help out in the clinic, which is next Tues and Fri. I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time, these kids were hilarious. When Emily first walked up a lot of the girls remembered her, one girl ...
Nairobi, Kenya orielle... bandages, and gauze. We will take the supplies a little at a time each day. If we take a big bag, it might disappear on the matatu! : ) Everything continues to amaze me here. The people are so friendly, and we have heard some incredible stories. It really makes me think about priorities in life, and putting others first. I can tell this experience is going to be a part of me for the rest of my life. That’s all for now- I’ll be in touch!

... the women build. They say it takes 5 months for the women to make one home and they lasts for about 9 years before they are typically forced to move because of termites. We were shown necklaces with lion teeth and claws and explained the Maasai practices of killing lions with nothing but spears! They also explained that men can have many wives and numerous children. The leader said that his father had 6 wives and over 32 children! They still practice male and female ...
