Stranded in the snow

... then made it back to some paths where the snow had been partly cleared so the walking was easier. The guide said that she had lived in Nagano for 40 years and had never known such heavy snow. We made our way back to the ryokan for breakfast. This was entirely vegetarian and we sat on floor cushions at very low individual lacquered tables. Then it was off, by bus, to the railway station. When we arrived at the station it was to find it very crowded and there were tv crews there ...

... last tickets are issued at 4:00. Our tour leader had phoned ahead to the ticket office and managed to persuade them to stay open, so we got in. By the time we got there the hot spring where the monkeys bathe was being brushed clean and the monkeys had left it so we didn't see any monkeys in the water. That was disappointing. In 3 trips to Japan I've seen a lot of impressive sights, both man-made and natural, and this castle is up there with the best of them. It isn't as imposing as Himeji castle, but both inside and out, it is quite simply stunning. ...

... the last 10 days. We very easily found our way out onto the street, since there are only 2 exits.

I was expecting it to be quite cool. We were in the Japanese alps after all. But still, it was snowing in Miyajima, and it was barely cold enough to warrant a jacket, and when we walked out of the train station it wasn't even snowing. But it was cold. Easily the coldest temperature that this Australian had ever felt up to that point. It would have been lucky if ...
