... Out of the mountains and about 30 minutes from Nagano. Maleny/Montville style town. Warm here, about 24 degrees - so we were a bit hot as we dressed for the mountains. While touristy, it is quiet and unhurried. It is chestnut season for this area so speciality shops with everything "chestnut" and cafes, beautiful craft stores, sake brewery (no thanks after last nights headache), galleries and museums. There is also an open garden ...

Excitement today as the first trip on the Shinkansen to Nagano up in the mountains where the Winter Olympics were held in 1998. I rode from my friend's place in Shinagawa to the Tokyo train station this morning to very little traffic as it was a holiday Monday here. I was on the road by 7:30 AM before there were too many cars on the road and it was a bit of rush to be riding down these huge, empty streets in central Tokyo. I activated day 2 of my 5 days usage within 14 days Japan Rail East pass and caught a shinkansen to IIyama in Nagano Prefecture. It's one stop after Nagano ...

Snow monkey day

... Walked down to Shibu onsen. People walking from bath to bath wearing Yukata and Japanese shoes. Finally made it back to the ryokan. Put on our Yukata and shoes and walked to a nearby onsen. It was very hot, could only put legs in, Philip squirted cold water on us to help . Went for dinner , then back to the ryokan. Tatami and futons, tiny rice filled pillows. Best things today - the snow ...
