We enjoyed a stroll around the city art gallery, nearby we find an antique market and purchased a General’s hat and some medals to add to the Mongravian uniform and enjoyed our first taste of Bulgarian beer (great even though a little warm).

... the weight limit Lufthansa allowed for carry-on luggage, and you know if anyone would be a stickler about rules, it would be the Germans. I also didn't look forward to lugging so much luggage around on my back. However, I was equally worried about a checked bag somehow getting lost on my return to the US, when I had planned a short side trip to London. ... I was fascinated by the idea of travel and adventure across the world, and no symbol had come closer to embodying this spirit to my mind than the Orient Express. It stood for everything that was strange and unknown to me, a proud ambassador of all things different and beyond my reach. To see a remnant of it now in such a forgotten and relatively neglected state made me more than a little sad.
