We've had a great day today, helped by sunshine and dryness, even though we were a bit cold at times! We took a train to Olsztynek, about 30km south. After ages yesterday trying to work out the buses, we found we could get a train from Olsztyn West, which is closer than where the buses go from, and takes about half the time. ... as frequently as every 7 minutes at commuter times, and still every half hour on a Sunday. They look more like tube trains, with plenty of seating, and little maps to tell you the stations along the line. But they are also bike friendly. In one coach there was space for at least 6 bikes to be hung, and in another there was a section of seating which flipped up with bike hooks above the seats, and a slot for the back wheel on the underside ...

Yesterday very successful day chasing ancestors - went tp szczytno (ortelsburg) ,Olsztyn ( Allenstein ), sadowo near biskupiec, alt keykuth in polish stare kiejkuty - there is supposed to be a secret CIA post there. Off to the airport at gdansk. At the airport now. Poland must have the craziest drivers in the world. They overtake on double lines and push opposing traffic off the road!! ... of paper and the farmers wife and her husband became quite animated. So the First Lady and the farmers wife marched us across these paddocks through locked gates etc- I started to think - something has gone wrong here - no cemetery in sight. So we get to these trees in the middle of nowhere and sure enough it's a tiny cemetery . When we found our relative's grave we couldn't believe it!!! Really touching ...

We met a lovely couple over breakfast who told us how Poland had changed and how poor it used to be. Now it has a fabulous infra structure and is quite modern - only in some of the country towns can you see the remainder of some of the poverty. So we are off to discover some of our ancestors roots today. He said that hitler and Stalin made a pact and all the Germans were driven away from Prussia and the German Ukrainian were re settled in Prussia . So it wasn't their home ...
