Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

For the first time, we slept with the windows open, and with a blanket. The lake was so pretty as the lights came on, and the church bells chimed. Last night, after our treacherous drive, and even more treacherous hike, Eleana, told us there was a shortcut to our car. About half way down the very steep path, Jim reminded me of all the horror movies where you always yell, "never take the short cut!!" I laughed so hard, I almost fell!! It was a beautiful walk ...

    Day 241

I find a side road that I think will take me to the next town south, so I can avoid the highway for a bit. What I can't avoid is the rain. Not that big a deal though--it's quite a different feel getting rained on when you know you have a warm bed, shower and place to dry your shoes at night, versus the uncertainty of sleeping out in the wild.

I do duck into the train ...
