... some money on cab fare. Hopefully I can remember to ride on the left side of the street and the other vehicles remember to do the same. I'm also hoping that the rumors of English-speaking guides are true.
Adjusting my expectations... I had thought I'd zip through the castle and get to Kyoto early. Probably not. Everything takes longer than you think.

... There we spent the night in a ryoken- a traditional guest house with tatimi mats that you sleep on. The place was very old and our room was enveloped by cool paper sliding doors. The hostess poured us some green tea before she left and gave us kimonos to wear around the place. For dinner we went out and found ourselves in a Hawaiian restaurant- bit odd I know! Then we went back and slept on the floor.
Yudunaka, Chubu, Japan markandchar... The Japanese students asked us questions, and we asked the Japanese students questions. They were all anonymous, which was nice. The questions ranged from what is your favorite foods to do you think we speak english well, to "would you ever date a Japanese person?" It was great to see how curious our new friends had become and it was amazing to realize how much we don't really know about each others cultures. Although the Japanese are ...
Mt. Fuji, Japan maillette.cDay two of the seminar included presentations by all the American students on a policy book and another book called Japan: Unbound by John Nathan. My presentations focused on Fiscal Policy comparing Japan and America and Breakdown in the Classroom, a focus on Education. After the presentations, we broke into smaller groups with some of the Japanese ...
Mt. Fuji, Japan maillette.c... I was wrong--we entered a tunnel on one side of a mountain to cloudy green landscape and existed, at the same altitude of the other side to a completely white world, including snow driving almost horizontal. So I had hoped that being situated behind a mountain range, the low, rainy/snowy clouds would be stopped from Kamikochi. Turns out this is only half true--the West facing mountains didn't stop the storm front, but the Eastern ones did, meaning that the storm came over ...
Kamikochi, Kanto, Japan mchao... garden complex. Quite like the one in Matsuyama, is a bit bigger, but the grounds are less reconstructed. But since it was pouring rain, I didn't actually go into the castle as the sights of the surrounding area would probably have consisted of fog and gray. After the drive by touring, wandered Nakamachi for an hour, intimidated by being only 1 of the few people out and about and also ambivalent about the ceramics and artwork. Maybe I'm ...
