Silly drunk in Zanzibar

... 8221; which I thought might mean “chill out” and actually meant “yes, he’d take some money off.” I chuckled a little because I hadn’t realized people really use that phrase, I had imagined it was just a popular phrase we know from the Lion King rather then something that is actually used commonly.

The rest of the group came back and said the Spice Tour had been really great, and then we all put on our suits ...

... likely get killed by other monkeys anyway. So hard.
Today we went snorkling (where A3 wouldn't stop singing "Don't Worry, Be Happy" to the point the guys sailing the Dhow for us started singing it. I got to see Clown Fish, Angle Fish, swim though schools of silvery ones and zebra ones and try and avoid the numerous sea urchins everywhere. We've just had lunch where I made friends with about 4 local cats (2 being chased around by a toddler) and am about to ...

... I wish I could just double blink my eyes and somehow take some still shot in my brain!

Had a fun night playing with a firestick that some cute little pyromaniac italian girl had. She had ropes, pois, firesticks, hula hoops.... so 3 of us did a performance down on the beach. Fortunately got away from lighting my hair or clothes!

Melissa and I have decided that Zanzibar boys have the life.... they play soccer, they chill, they smoke weed, the ...

Normally the first night is spent in Stone Town but because Margarita had to head back early the trip was changed a bit so that we headed straight up to Nungwi.

We took the ferry from Dar across to Zanzibar in the morning and landed at Stone Town. The afternoon involved going on a spice tour which was actually really cool as it described what ...

Day 209 211 - Tanzania, Zanzibar - Island Paradise

... and passed out in a pool of water, whilst Stu slumped over the chairs. Oooh hangovers on boat rides = not nice. So long as they don't spew.... Arriving at Zanzibar we said goodbye to everyone then jumped in a dalla dalla (taxi) with Sarah and Martin... destination Nungwi found at the very top of the island, an hour or so drive away on good roads. for the price of s20,000. At the start of the town the roads turned to dirt and as there had been quite a lot of rain over ...

... a crowd form to check us out. It's always interesting to see people's reactions, especially kids... almost everyone we drive past stops what they are doing and looks - some look confused, a few look disgusted, but lots of people give us a smile and a wave or a thumbs up. Driving towards South Luangwa was kind of interesting because the further we drove, the kids had fewer smiles and more hands extended, begging for food. It's a pretty terrible feeling driving past kids with a truck ...

Paradise

... no idea where the place I was looking for was. I made it clear that I wanted to stay at Romatic Bungalows (someone I met in South Africa had recommended it to me as being the cheapest place to stay (at $20 a night!!) in the area). I figured as long as he took me there, great. Figured maybe the hotel would give him something. Turned out to be a really nice guy. He works as an artist. Lives in StoneTown and commutes to Nungwi to sell his work. He found the hotel for me ...

Zanzibar, island paradise and 3rd world experience

... this tropical getaway. The humidity is something else to believe, nothing dries, but then one doesn't need much more than a sarong, bikini and slops (wear them because there is a funny little sand-worm worm that can find its way into your toes as two of our party discovered, it itches like CRAZY, but is easily cured with a good dose of VERMOX or three!!) Well holiday over it was back on the "jumpy" flight back to Johannesburg to resume reality and urban life once more until another day.

... tired of the familiar call of, "Jambo!" and the inevitable, if pleasant and polite, attempt to sell them something. They are asked their names and where they're from and, eventually, their interest in snorkelling, or accomodations, or transportation, or fresh fruit, or.... None of this does anything to detract from the immense beauty of Zanzibar. Soon, back to the mainland, and the safari capital of Arusha.

Zanzibar

It's hard to believe that my internship was scheduled to finish in early March and I should be on a plane today, flying back to Canada. But I love what I'm doing and I've decided to extend my placement until the end of April, with a break in a few weeks to travel a bit more. Thanks to our fabulous internship coordinator, all six VIDEA interns were able to go to Zanzibar last week.. We flew from Lusaka to Dar es Salaam and made a mad rush to catch the last ferry of ...
