Max Wiley we love you

Next monday marks the 5 month anniversary of this blog. Technically the end of my adventure. Wow. Time bloody flies.

This week also marks the end of the road for my Aussie cricket mates who also just happened to head this way at the same time I did. Nic flew out last night and Davo, who i owe for some of the hilarious Chelmsford anecdotes in earlier posts, flew out tonight. I feel empty. I barely spent any time with Nic, but it was comfortable knowing he was just a few hours away if I...

Confessions of a Chugger

**chugger noun a person who is paid to stand in a public place and ask people who pass by to make regular donations to a particular charity. From the phrase 'charity mugger.'

For the past three weeks, I've been employed as a paid professional fundraiser for a company who basically train and recruit fundraisers, in return being paid a certain amount of money, generally out of the charity's fundraising or advertising budgets. Fundraisers, to quote my supervisor are like "walking, tal...

My London top Ten (I think)

1. Tate Modern (big modern art gallery, on South Bank, amazing building, has some great stuff in it as well!) I've been there like six times, I think!
2. National Gallery & Portrait Gallery - on Trafalgar Square, worth a visit...Nat gallery has some cool impressionist stuff, and the Portait Gallery has the originals of portraits of Shakespeare or various royals you've seen a million times, amongst many others.
3. A broadway show - there's a million shows on at any one time in London...

Pro Brochere Handerouterer

I was approached one day (I like to think of it as being head hunted ;)) whilst chugging about a job going as a promotions person, good money, cash in hand, so after I handed in my notice so to speak, I thought, why not. Something different. This is all about the experiences after all.

On arriving at the public house, at about nine pm I was introduced to Sonya*, a twenty something year old from northern Ireland, living in east London and working a 9-5 job in an employment agency. Unfor...

Preparation

So then, the countdown begins...... Have sent my passport away this week for the all important visa and have dug out my favorite hiking boots and jacket. Have managed to create my own blog (phew) and am looking forward to finishing work and setting off on my journey...All the paperwork has arrived, tickets, detailed itinerary, guidebooks and a very nice travel wallet, so despite spending much of my time on an airplane for work, I am actually looking forward to traveling just for me. More late...

OK then....Visa arrived on Friday, so I really can travel now!! Dug out my sturdy case and have almost packed everything, as I know I will get ZERO time to do anything this week or next weekend!! Favorite hiking boots are up for a clean and waterproof and hiking jacket will be a must! Have found a great website for learning Chinese and aim to teach myself at least 10 words by the time I go! Starting to look forward to it now....

Historical Traveler Reviews of My Place London

Safe and friendly hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My daughter and I stayed at the My Place Hotel in August 2004. We had many problems with our flight to England and were relieved and delighted by the help we got from the hotel staff.

Our room was small but very clean and very private. We were not bothered by other guests or by the nightclub downstairs. Everything worked.

This hotel is within 1 block of the tube station which makes it easy to get there from Heathrow as well as all other London locations. We purchased week passes for the tube and were able to get everywhere we wanted to go.

This hotel is not a luxury hotel, but is clean, friendly and most of all safe. I would stay there again.

Would stay here again.

First, I want to say that this IS a very reasonably priced hotel. We priced many. Second, for the money, this was a nice little hotel. We had a small fridge, a blow dryer, (make sure they are PLUGGED IN), a small safe (USE IT!!=even if there is a fee), tons of hot water and pressure in the shower, face clothes, (just remind them you use them EVERYDAY!), a fan to make sure the room was cool enough (it is NOT air-conditioned, but we were fine as we stayed for a week in September) and little, if any, noise from the neighbors. The breakfast was plenty for us and INCLUDED. The room was small but what we expected. Earl's Court is a very busy place and though the street the hotel is actually on is quiet, the one on the corner, Earl's Court Road, is quite bustling. Plenty of resturants (fish&chips, pubs, bakery, Zizzi Italian (GOOD!), Nando's, McD's, KFC, ect.) right there. The McDonalds is even open until 1:00AM most nights. A local Sainsbury (grocery store) just down the street. The street noise might bother some, but we didn't mind it. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, even looked up something for us on the internet when they weren't sure of an answer. Was it perfect? Of course not. But what or who is? All I can say is that we were very happy!

Not bad at all

I stayed at My Place Hotel for a few days in August. Great location! The Earls Court tube station is literally around the corner, so you can get around town with ease. There are also numerous restaurants and a market located very close to the hotel.

The accomodations were fine for me. The room wasn't as small as I was expecting and the bathroom was newly remodeled. The shower worked great.

I plan on going back to London in a few months and I will definitely stay at this hotel again. Great buget hotel!

Not very good, OKAY

A/C did not work, the hotel was hot even on a cloudy day with about 85 degrees...the room had a small fan not enough to cool the room...breakfast was basic nothing great...the rooms are not really cleaned well- you could see dust on the furnitures and in the toilet...actually expensive for the money you pay...however great location 1 block to the Earl's court UG station and lots of restaurants and grocery stores nearby, and laundromats...

Great Budget Hotel

from Mom-bird58
My 15 year-old daughter and I spent a week in June at this victorian hotel. It had been recently remodeled, and everything was clean and quite nice. We stayed on the 4th floor, and the elevator worked well and looked new. Continental breakfast was good, and included several cereals, hot toast, boiled eggs, sliced ham and two cheeses, and yogurt. The breakfast room is very nice, and you can also eat outside in the garden area, which is nice. The staff was mostly young college-age girls (one was from New York), and they were always pleasant and very helpful. I don't believe the hotel has air conditioning, but there are fans in the rooms, and this was adequate. Some really nice touches: a mini-fridge in the room, great for sodas and juice, a blow-dryer, washcloths, and mini shampoo and cream rinse. There was also a small safe in the room (you key in your own password), which was great for passports and cash. We stayed in room 404, an L-shaped room with two twin beds, and it was pretty roomy - no dresser for clothes, though. Only four hangers in the closet (we always bring some cheap plastic ones with us, then leave them). Hotel guests were quiet - mostly couples, single men who looked like businessmen, and a few families with one or two older children. We never heard noise from other guests, and though we were near the elevator, we never heard it or people coming and going. Though there are no major attractions nearby, the Earl's Court Tube stop is less than a block away and very convenient.

The hotel is just a few steps off of busy Earl's Court Road, and is in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Pizza Hut, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's, and Burger King are just a block or two away, and stay open until the wee hours. There's also a nice bakery, plenty of small, cozy restaurants (Italian, Indian, etc) and pubs. Everything stays open until at least midnight. The hotel has a nightclub in the basement, and when it lets out around 2 or 3 a.m., it can get pretty noisy out on the street. There was also quite a bit of traffic noise outside our window, which faced the street. We liked the bustle, and the noise didn't really bother us, but it can be noisy until pretty late, so if you are a light sleeper, I think you would need a room located away from the street. Other than street noise, this was a great little budget hotel. We would stay here again!

Very pleasant visit!

We had a very nice stay at My Place. Yes room was small, but what we expected in a "Victorian townhouse". Clean bathroom. Liked having a refrigerator. Staff was very helpful and pleasant, which to us, meant a lot. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone budget-minded. For the money, I would say it is above average. (The nightclub downstairs didn't bother us, either.)

Good Value

from Cardio
This hotel is good for the budget-minded. The room was small but had a refrigerator. The staff was friendly and continental breakfast included in stay. Easy access from Heathrow - Piccadily line to Earl's Court Station and just around the corner.

Good Budget Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent 9 days in this nicely located hotel. Our room was small, clean and with a modern bathroom. It was showing some wear around the wallpaper but otherwise was a good deal for the price. One negative is the location of a nightclub in the basement. If you are a light sleeper then you will need earplugs.

The staff and owner were extremely helpful.

Very convenient to the Earls Court Tube(1 minute walk) and many reasonable restaurants.

The continental buffet breakfast was in a nicely decorated ground floor room overlooking their garden. Eggs or a full English Breakfast could be had for an extra charge.

If you are looking for a budget hotel in a good location then My Place should fit the bill.

I stayed here in June 2003 and got good value for my budget rate. Room size decent, bathroom clean with lots of hot water and great water pressure, cable tv, and fridge, only 1 minute from Earls Court tube station. Only complaints are room not vacuumed or dusted enough, and no a/c in the rooms. Would use this hotel again.
