Very sad to be leaving Thailand for the final time but it`s a race against time as our visa ran out and we had to leave to head for the border .
The mini bus picked us up at our hotel and we set off, we were quite surprised there was only one other person on the bus and presumed we were picking others up from their accommodation, but no, tr...
Admittedly we didn't originally plan to venture into the relatively unknown town of Alor Star (or Alor Setar), but our time on Langkawi was cut short due to the lack of budget options and fully booked accommodation. As it turned out it was to be expected, since it was Hajj, the most important Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
You can drive a Thai registered car into Malaysia.
1. U need to bring the original title plus an English translation. (Pattaya Land transportation office, 25B, same day)
2. If the car is not under your name u will need an authorization letter from the car owner.
3. After the immigration check points, at the shops, u can buy Mala...
We decided that we would spend our last week on the island of Langkawi, which is a 2.5hr ferry ride north from Penang (near the Thai border). It was coming into the low season so the island was pretty quiet. We spent our first 2 days at Tengah beach but then moved up the road to Cenang beach- which is the most popular so they go to the trouble o...

We took a long distance bus from Ipoh to the island of Penang off the west coast, the location of Malaysia's second largest city, Georgetown. After a journey of a couple of hours we were approaching our destination, seeing the island in the distance, a mass of green forest with huge white resort buildings lining the coast and the Komtar tower r...
Georgetown, Penang, Pinang, Malaysia heathermillsWe have now left the backpacking haven of Thailand and moved south to Malaysia. Both on somewhat of a Thailand downer, we have frequently joked how easy and cheap it would be to fly back Bangkok and float back to our favourite places again for 3 weeks. However, travelling is about going forth not back. So we arrived, a large city island attahced...
Penang, Malaysia hedwig_the_bearHaving just enjoyed both excellent dim sum and the sweltering heat and drenching humidity this morning for breakfast I have decided to retreat to a cool air conditioned internet cafe. Some time to digest and cool off is mandatory today as I am feeling a bit sluggish. It has been a while since I have provided updates as I was giving birth to a la...

Pheww!!!!!! two internet cafes and two photo shop centers later, I managed to salvage most of my pics. I only lost 6. (Compared to 300, I can take the loss!) I'm really glad I had burned some pics to a cd already while I was in Bali, so I wouldn't have lost EVERY pic i'd taken since I left home! Now I have 3 discs of pics for all you wonderful p...
Georgetown, Penang, Pinang, Malaysia ciarasampaioNumber 27 (3rd December 2004 - 6th December 2004): Malaysia and the miracle of Germolene Picking up the non-stop express to Butterworth we sped down south. The first sign we were approaching Malaysia were the large groups of young women, all wearing jeans and headscarves. We tore on through scenery of coconut and rubber plantations, flat farmlan...
Penang, Malaysia williebobsNext morning when we arose we were greeted with the approach to the popular Malaysian resort island of Langkowi. The view from the Virgo was picture perfect with small deserted tropical islands dotting the calm waters as we sailed toward Langkowi's jetty. The jetty was quite long and more prestigious looking than the one we docked at in Phuket. ...
