      The first half hour went through the old town and into the modern suburbs. Once out of the city the trail wandered through fields, rolling hills and a then up the steep climb to Alto Del Perdon (altitude 790m). Rows of windmills dotted the hills.

      to overtake. This procedure usually involves overtaking big slow moving trucks, as the driver (me) can’t see around the vehicle in front, the one you are trying to overtake. In Europe and the USA (civilized) fine, in South America (uncivilized), unbelievably stressful for Gael and potentially deadly for everybody.
      Putting all the above into the mix, I think for us, the only realistic way to complete this trip in the future would be to purchase a LHD ...

      Boldly going forward we set off east towards Ponferrada, then onto Astorga, Leon and finally Burgos. The road between Ponferrada and Astorga was part of the Camino de Santiago route again, albeit in the opposite direction, and involved traversing some pretty gnarly backroads by European standards.
