Change of Plans?

... What it does mean, we're not quite sure of yet. Still dealing with the shock and going over a few different options. All while kicking myself for not realizing this sooner. Only one thing is for certain - I'm not going to let this spoil our trip, and we're going to have to get cycling! (o.k., two things).

Tales from the Pit

... that there are many other sounds that are difficult to identify.

But eventually the weather turned more and more against us. Racing around in the mornings trying to gather bits of clothing with frozen fingers and struggling to see through the clouds our breath made all while holding a flashlight eventually caused us to retreat inside.

Much warmer and more convenient, but there’s something I miss about the sounds of the ...

Brain Food

... on toast it resembled scrambled eggs in both texture and taste. Won’t become my favourite dish, but it was interesting to try out. I can certainly appreciate the effort to use every part of an animal in respect for it giving it’s life, but I did feel a little like Hannibal Lectre. There’s just something in knowing you’re eating brain that doesn’t appeal over all the other organs on an animal.

Boarder Patrol

... called ‘Patou’ are raised with a herd (Pyrenees mountain dogs). As a result they will guard and defend their animals from any predator they may face - including humans. If you happen to wander in range they will bark furiously and give you many warnings to get away. If you don’t heed the warnings - you’re at your own risk with a fierce dog that comes up to your ...

Magic Mushrooms

On the hunt for wild mushrooms. A classic French activity is to scour the woods after an autumn night of rain and harvest he bounty of fungi that appears almost as if by magic. Quite the site to see an old couple emerging from the woods heavy-laden with overflowing bags of mushrooms from their top-secret harvesting grounds.

On the property is an area they call the ‘mushroom bank’. Walking ever so slowly back and forth, stopping ...

Wiener Wrangling

Finally the day that had been talked about all week was here. One little (not so little at +100lbs) wiener pig was in the sow park and needed to be moved to be with his buddies. He was only there due to a previous escape and was starting to get picked on by Shaft (the big black breeding boar). Time to get him out before he gets any bigger and more difficult.

Now catching a pig is not an ...

Making Cheese in France!

... wash down the aging cheese rounds, feel the curds, and pack the molds. Quite amazing to think that in a couple of months people will be buying this cheese that we made.

Inside the cavern were shelves and shelves of large saggy cheeses in various stages of decay. Dark and moist it’s the perfect place for the yummy bacteria to grow that makes the cheese so tasty. This particular ...

Las Laous

... there are 9 chickens (half laying half meat) and a rooster, 5 cows and a calf (again 2 are pregnant), and some goats which I’ve never seen. Part of communal living in the Pyrenees entitles each commune to certain areas in the higher mountains where everyone can graze their animals. Rather than ‘owners’ of land, these people see themselves of ...

Into the Pyrenees

Today was the day to head into the mountains. Having never cycled in mountains before, I was quite dubious about the task. Especially considering my track record. So far on this trip, ‘hills’ have caused me great pain and anxiety. So in comparison, ‘mountains’ seemed like they might be a mite bit worse.

Pulling away from the bustle of city life, and the crowded together towns, it was quite refreshing to have ...

when i was in Lleida

... Jamon. and itīs the flavour of spanish ham. and last but not least, i love the oh-so-civilised people here who take public transport. when boarding the metro, people do NOT charge in like mad bulls, they keep to one side and itīs so much more pleasant. ALSO! they ALWAYS keep to one side on the escalator. you canīt belive how much i appreciate this, i know that this is probably so in many other cities but in singapore, no.
