      River deep, mountain high... The plan is to get up at 5.30 am and leave by 6.30 so we have plenty of time to tackle today's 80 km ride which includes the Haast Pass. What actually happened... The anti cyclonic storm predicted to come through from the south of NZ through to the north last night didn't eventuate until five this morning. We get up anyway thinking it will blow over soon enough. We are ready to go by 6.45 but the rain is absolutely bucketing down. So we wait. We check ...

      The 16th saw the beginning of our Routeburn tramp! (tramping is the kiwi term for hiking over large distances). We had moved North from Queenstown to Glenorchy where we camped at the start of the Routeburn track, giving us a good start for the walk this morning (having got our backpacks hurriedly packed in the dark the night before). We realised our bags were far too heavy (19kg!) but figured it was best to simply get moving and deal with the extra weight ...

      ... 9 C. Lake Wanaka is the 4th Largest Lake in NZ and from the City Wanaka you have the mountain Panorama with Mt. Aspiring at 3033 meter as the Highest Peak to the left , Mt. Alta in in the Middle and the Mc.Kerrow Range to the right ... when looking north -west from Wanaka It is really an very nice panorama.... the Lake is about 45 km long ... Ski Area with Treble cone only about 45 minutes ...

      We were expecting a considerable amount more 'up' on our journey to Queenstown given that it is where the snow was supposed to be and therefore where the skiing would be found. As a result when we finally saw the lights of the city twinkling in the distance over the lake we were a little surprised we hadn't climbed zig zagging mountain roads to the point where your ears pop.
