      ... nowhere to be seen! With our mission aborted, it was back to the ranch via the supermarket to stock up on booze (eurgh!) and food for our planned barbecue that evening.       We spent Wednesday getting ready for our first hike. On picking up our hut passes for the following two nights we were informed that the section of track, Harris Saddle, between the two huts was closed due to an avalanche risk. The track is assessed every morning for risk and a decision made so there was a slight chance that by Friday the saddle would be open.       ... we have noticed a distant lack of New Zealanders working in shops & restaurants etc as there are so many different nationalities but mainly from England and Ireland.       We were expecting a considerable amount more 'up' on our journey to Queenstown given that it is where the snow was supposed to be and therefore where the skiing would be found. As a result when we finally saw the lights of the city twinkling in the distance over the lake we were a little surprised we hadn't climbed zig zagging mountain roads to the point where your ears pop.
