    We awoke to a stunning sunrise between the trees outside the picture windows of the lodge. Although we had a short walk of 9k today, our wake up call was again in darkness as we had to meet our coach at the end of the walk at 2pm.  Leaving the Routeburn Falls Lodge we immediately started descending through a beech forest, initially for a short distance on a steep, uneven, rocky surface before the track became a well groomed, more even surface as it continued ...

    ... which takes you over Mt Aspiring and several of the 100+ glaciers in the vicinity, before descending along the ancient glacier-torn river valleys. There is a helicopter that drops you to a walk trail, which upon completion, you are picked up by a jet boat for the journey back. Due to the weather yesterday, both the helicopter and plane are busy and fully booked. We can however jump onto the near-empty jet boat for a run upstream for a pick up at 1:00 pm. Due ...

    ... heavy but with our heavy duty raincoats on; we stay warm. Our hats over our helmets which have come in so handy during the warmer days, are helpful when it's raining as well. Tina prefers not to wear sunglasses when it's overcast and the hat visor keeps the rain off the face. Our first stop is at the 25 km mark at the Roaring Billy Falls.
