Dead Sea & Mt Nebo

Our last 2 days were intended to be all about relaxation. The Moevenpick Dead Sea has the world's first spa (supposedly the Queen of Sheba and Solomon visited awhile back...probably before it was the Moevenpick :) We left Aqaba in the morning and headed north along the Dead Sea Highway. It's close to the border with Israel, so we were stopped often. "Where are you from?" "Passports?" "Where are you going?" "Where are you coming from?". Many of the Jordanian soldiers looked like bored teenager...

Bobbing about

Another 6am start to head off to the Dead Sea. A 4 hour journey to get there so I settled down with my neck pillow and pashmina and snoozed. Another rest stop, another souvenir opportunity although this one was geared towards packs of mud and Dead Sea mineral products.

The drive up was through the desert until we got to the southern tip of the Dead Sea which was a beautiful turquoise blue with many areas of the coast showing a clear salt deposit at the edge of the water. There is a lo...

We really did float!

Today started out much better. After breakfast, the driver showed up right on time. He was very nice and even tried to give us a little bit of a 'tour.' His friendliness made up for the fact that his van only had room ofr 7 passengers and there were 9 of us. It was only about 1/2 hour into the drive when we learned that the van didn't have air conditioning. (something you might want to ask about when you are going to the dessert in 100 degree weather!!!)
The first stop was Madaba ...

Crusades, Kings Highway, yeah yeah... DEAD SEA!

We did a few different things today, but far and away the highlight was our visit to the Dead Sea.

We drove along the Kings Highway - a modern day highway but named for the road from the Crusades that followed the same path - stopping in at Karak Castle, hearing a few more stories about our friend Saladir (last mentioned at the Citadel in Cairo) and generally driving around for a long time.

Then we arrived at the Dead Sea Resort in ...

You can float, really! It is so weird

... a large replica of his staff at the very top in the shape of a cross. Mount Nebo often gives views all the way to Jerusalem on a clear day, unfortunately being mid day in the summer the heat produced a haze that would not let you see very far. It is recommended for the best views to go in the morning in winter time when the temperatures are cooler and the air is clearer. Either way the mountain was most impressive with great views of nearby Jordan ...

The long and winding road on a bus

Well, first off I'm actually back in Fredericton right now safe and sound, but feel a need to wrap up my blogs, so here we go...

The day after Petra consisted of an example of why I hate tour groups. Basically, we left our hotel at 7 am and went all day from place to place until our final destination in Madaba around 6 pm.

On this never ending ride, we saw such things as the Kerak ...

... the guard led us through the ruins towards a large building resembling an aircraft hangar. We chatted with him, and he told us about himself and about the site. He was a Bedouin (the native nomadic desert people), and he told us a little about his people (including the word “habibbi” – 'dear friend’ or ‘my love’ if you’re a woman). He also explained to us the Islamic burial custom of facing the graves towards Mecca, which ...

Where the streets have no names

The streets in Madaba do have names, at least in the maps we've seen they do. But street signs are rare, except for in the main tourist area, and it makes navigating very challenging. Add in a lot of street construction and almost exclusively one-way streets and you've got some fun finding your way around. On our first full day in Madaba we planned a trip to the Dead Sea. Actually getting out of Madaba and headed in the right direction was a bit stressful, but by ...

Well this is the last day

... we had stops on the way. Firstly at the crudader castle at Karak. Enormous and very cold as the wind blew straight through you. Well worth a visit. Secondly we went to the Dead Sea, much warmer. Yes I did go in and bobbed arround like a cork. Mind you the water found all the small cuts a scrapes which stung like hell. Infact I went in twice. Thirdly we moved onto Mount Nebo where Moses (Musa) looked into the promised land. There is a Fransiscan Monistary there. We could not ...

... sites from Lebanon to Egypt. The sites (which are in Greek) are clearly marked but unfortunately only 1/3 of the map remains in tact. The historians date the construction of the map at 560 AD but it was not discovered until 1864. What remains of the mosaic map is quite fragmented. The church also houses new mosaics depicting the life of Christ. Down the road from St. Georges is the ...

With a pinch of tequila and lemon...the dead sea!

Leaving Amman behind us, we drove along the Kings Highway to Madaba to visit St Georges Church and the mosaic map of the holy land. Madaba is a huge complex famous for its mosaics and a deep christian history. We arrived before all the crowds, but there was a mass and christening being held, so we were asked to wait. No problems, little did we know that by the time the service was over, every single bus tour company had turned up and those tourists have no ...
