South Island Tour

Here's what happened on our '18 Day Whistle Stop Tour' of the South Island in a very aged, battered, scraped tiny Toyota 'Starlet' 1.3 Auto (yes 'auto' for those that didn't realise you could get such a small engine in an auto - we requested a manual but they couldn't provide!) 25th - 27th March CHRISTCHURCH. After catching our plane by default, we arrived safely at some ungodly hour after a very pleasant flight with real cornflakes and much needed a cup of tea/coffee (cheers Tim for getting ...

Jade and...nothing but some good pics

Went to Hokitika because it sounded interesting. Goddess was I wrong! The minute I got off the bus (only went once a day) I thought: I'm only staying the night! Nothing to do, but look at jade shops...though the beach was nice and I got to see the first sunset in a row of five days. And I got some really good pics too.

Wild West

Day 78 - Left Westport (hurrah!) at 9am for another spectacularly scenic journey South. Stopped for a morning walk to a fur seal colony, followed by lunch at Punakaiki to see the famous pancake rocks and blowholes and onto Greymouth. Decided here to jump off the bus at Hokitika (on My Orr's advice) rather than head to a fancy dress **** up in a remote pub for the night. I will rejoin the bus tomorrow at Franz Josef where a full day glacial hike will be the order of the day.

... of them because apparently for each one on the surface there are another 4 or under the water. I took short video clips of them and have tried to include these with the photos – hope you can see them OK.

On Saturday morning the weather was dismal for my journey towards the west coast. But first off I took a wee detour through the town of Kaikoura to the resident seal colony. Most of them were further offshore but there were a few nearer, including one which ...

... minutes in the middle of the road taking photos. Not one asian tourist walked by without getting a picture from the middle of the road. Punakika had a tourist stop at Pancake Rocks. We were here at low tide so the blowholes were not blowing. The pancake rocks were not that impressive to me (not a geologist).

South Island Part 9: Greymouth & Christchurch

... our guide, but we were again left alone with the pumps after this for 10 minutes. Then there was another mini bus to take us back to the other side of town to the railway hotel for a barbequeue. The sausages in New Zealand really do leave a lot to be desired, but it was food, and we'd been drinking, plus we got another free pint in with the deal. A "pint" in New Zealand basically means a drink. It usually bears no relation to the imperial ...

Greymouth, what a place!

... the local brewery and headed out that night! There was loads of people on the tour that were on the same Magic bus as us the following day! We spent the night drinking and playing pool. I showed the locals a few things on the pool table! I had an unbelivable run and won about 8 in a row! It was brilliant! Up early (as usual!) the next morning and took the bus to Franz Josef....our next stop!

Goodbye Greymouth

... see Shoshy and new baby Ariel in the hospital a couple of days ago, she's very sweet and apparently a very good baby so that should make coming back to work a bit easier for her. Went to Hokitika today to look at the millions of jade shops that they have over there, most of the stuff is the same that you see everywhere else, but there were a few cool shops selling more unusual pieces. Also spent ...
