True to the weather forecast we awoke to another lovely day, with the sun just beginning to shine on the Tower. After another leisurely breakfast we packed up our lunch and set off for a ride along the towpath of the Burgundy Canal - nice and flat - just my kind of cycling!
We were surprised ...
... the TGV line as well as the regional line. You can get to Paris in an hour! We checked out trains to Dijon, but engineering works meant bus replacements which weren't very convenient.
We arrived back from our walk feeling very hot and glad to sit out in the sun for a while.
... in Paris!!
We managed to get back to the main road by a shorter and slightly wider road. We then took the D10 road which had the TGV line to Lyons running alongside it - however we never saw a train.
We were heading for Semur-en-Auxois where we hoped to spend the night at the MH Aire there.
Auxerre (although considered the 4th largest city in Burgundy) has only 39,000 people in the city center and 92,000 including the suburbs. It is much smaller than Dijon and has hardly any tourist traffic. The city center, however, is very charming and I look forward to exploring it further over the next few months.
I hope that you enjoy the photos below! Welcome to Auxerre!
I don't have a lot to say about the village other than it was quite beautiful in a classic village type of way. Rolling green hills, vines climbing up ancient stone buildings, etc.
I may write more about it later, but for now I want to upload some photos while I still have wifi ...
