... which of the two sides we headed for?

Finding a parking spot was a bit of a challenge but the marriage survives. We ended up parking somewhere and when we emerged from the underground car park we immediately started shooting pictures of a massive church, the Notre Dame Cathedral. Unfortunately, when we couldn't get in, we asked and found out it was some other big church, we ...

This morning we slept in as there was no rush. We didn't get out the door until after 11a.m., but our drive was short. Our first stop of the day was the little town of Les Andelys and Chateau Gaillard. Chateau Gaillard is really a castle, not a French chateau, built by King Richard (the Lion Heart) in the late 1100's. It is pretty much of a ruin now, but it ...

For breakfast, we had eaten bread and water to get her assimilated to her situation, should her hearing go south. We showed up at her summons time (somewhere between 9-5). The policeman was friendly, but stern, with the accused. He sent us to the Tobac store (tobacco) across the street to pay the fine and return post haste with the proper ...

... br> Just next door was the car rental office (good planning). In a few minutes the nice lady had our car ready to go. We have a pint sized Toyota Yaris, but perfect for just the two of us. Gas costs about $7 per gallon, if I have it figured correctly (!), so using a little car is better. We just tell them we left our Rolls Royce at home.

    Basically, the day ...

The pilgrimage to Monet's garden in Giverny sums up so much about Paris - expensive, cumbersome, crowded but ultimately richly rewarding. Bumbled our way via metro to St Lazard, then overground train to Vernon and finally bus to Giverny - about 80km north-west of Paris. Hard to complain about tourists when you're one yourself however whatever zen Claude ...
