Hercules si popoarele migratoare

A reminder of touring..

... direct route to the ferry. Its turns into a barely disernable track and as rough as a footpath; slow and tough work. This touring business is no picnic. There is a family herding their cows along and another family packing up their tent after an overnight camp. after the fast progress on the road this a jolt back to reality.

Eventually I come to a restaurant then two and a road. This ferry is at the end of a road and a minor service ...

Orient not-very-express to Belgrade

... being paid by the kilometer, so it has many twists and turns but few expensive things like tunnels that get you through the mountains more quickly. When they tried to introduced a high speed train in Turkey somebody did it wrong and many people died. The new government says they are making trains a priority, at least to connect the major cities. In any case, I soon discovered that my train to Belgrade was of a similar sort. Slooooooow ...

Winter in Romania!

... the end of January trying to get everything lined up and in working order for all of the organizations. It has a been a crazy time with work, as I've been trying to train new people to take over Dana's role and most of them are inexperienced professionally and with volunteering! However in between all this craziness in January my good friend Mary was able to come visit me, which was wonderful. We always have a great time together and it was great to have some ...

Giving Thanks

... We finished our interviews with the Directors and now we are going to start on some of the staff employees. The responses and feedback we have received from the interviews so far is helping us to figure out what type of training is needed. If you remember, the problem brought to our attention was customer service, but as we expected, it goes beyond that. The work with my colleagues has been very good lately as it seems more trust is being built and an ...

Life in Resita

... slow advances with my organizations, and difficulty making friends. I hate that I even question why I'm here sometimes, when I know deep down exactly why I'm here. Of course I say "here" and part of me still associates that with Uzbekistan. I do wish I was still there and I have to say that my heart is still there, in some ways. However, happiness is definitely a state of mind, and when that state is constantly in flux it's hard to not only feel like yourself, but to ...

My first few weeks at site (Wks 1-3)

... meet a few new friends. That weekend several of us went to a huge Jazz Music festival in a village near the mountains called Garana and camped out all weekend...out in the rain and enjoyed jazz music from musicians all across Romania, Europe, and the a few from the U.S. including two-time grammy nominated Stanley Jordan. Yeah, it was pretty cool and a little surreal hearing one of the bands play a classic song about Route 66...ironically the road I practically grew ...

Less Dracula, More Gypsies

The train from Brasov to Timisora passes through Sibiu, which is notable since otherwise Sibiu is a bit awkward to reach, so a good tourist route. Of course I didn't know anything about Sibiu, so didn’t want to cancel my ticket just to explore, but YOU might want to. Timisoara is one of the country’s largest cities, and borders the Slavic countries also, so shows some of that influence, with exotic Turkish-looking churches. Try as I may ...
