It was lovely having Kaye stay with me for a few days. I picked her up at the Nice train station on the Monday evening. She had been on a cycling holiday with her brother and sisters and so was already in Europe. The train from Brussels was late. Surprise, surprise!!! Unfortunately I had to work the next two days but Kaye was happy resting her foot. She had been told she had tendonitis and it was quite swollen and giving her quite a bit of pain. (It now seems it ...

... the way back we explore the town as it awakes and gets ready for the influx of tourists that will soon arrive on the many Ferries. We decide to book a cruise on the lake in the afternoon that incorporates a tour of the Villa del Balbianello. This is operated by Bellagio Water Taxis, Luca and his Aussie wife Jennine, and we are lucky to score the last two tickets available.

We continue to explore the many little lanes that wind up the steep hill, do a bit of ...

It's nice to stay somewhere that’s real. Varenna is real.

We chose this place more or less by accident. We had a few days to kill between ending our cruise in Venice and catching a plane in Zurich, and had heard the Italian lakes district is worth seeing. All the reviews pointed to Bellagio – set on a lake, quaint narrow pathways climbing between old houses. But, Bellagio doesn’t have a train station. Enter Varenna. This little town of ...

... leaving and we are on the wrong side of the tracks, next train in 90 minutes. Can you call a taxi - yes, but it is a busy time in Bellamo and it will be a 90 minute wait (there is only one taxi in Bellamo). Can we catch a ferry or hire a boat, maybe but it is a 500 metre walk to the ferry station. So armed with a map and a couple of directions we set off and soon find the only ferry for the day which leaves in 5 minutes, what great timing. The ...

... I was very much into motor racing and Monza was the holy grail of F1 race tracks. I thought it would be a good idea to stop off at the track and have a look see. What a disappointment. The surrounding area is very run down and it looks as though the track hardly gets used anymore. They must do a quick sprucing up just before the Grand Prix. Everything looks dilapidated. Anyway we found a small retail outlet which was selling some ...
