Alexandroúpolis, Thrace, Greece
... with anybody. I went to various sites around the town with Patrick and his two friends (both named Dimitis), it was good because they had a car, and it being the weekend it allowed us travel around Komotini and the surrounding areas. We went to various bars to drink local liqueur and watch football. On the final night we attended a student concert that was organized by the school which Patrick and his friends teach at. It was a ...
Komotiní, Thrace, Greece b.a.manzella... I.e. eating). The trainer left shortly after the blessing, more concerned about his, somewhat disconcerted, girlfriend. The poor girl was the only woman in the party, apart from the barmaid and Tanja. Say no more. The pope left immediately after having done his religious duties. The cake he blessed did not survive more than two minutes. Neither did a mix of Retsina and Coke. We could not imagine something as foul as that, white wine with pine tree resin and ...
Alexandroupolis, Greece robertandtanja... there was not a single signpost to it, and it took some finding. However, once up there, and having had the ten minute walk from the top of the ride through mountains of litter to the "belvedere", the views were stunning. The belvedere is actually hidden at the end of huge white Hollywood style letters spelling out Brasov. After Vampire camping we continued south to Bucharest. We had been advised against entering ...
Alexandroúpolis, Thrace, Greece oldagetraveller... the Ottoman castle and some of the old buildings. The ferry is a hydrofoil albeit an ancient Russian one designed for river use, not open sea passages. The fare is an eye-watering 40 euros for the return crossing and, frankly, ain't worth it. The city is a modern port with a very attractive Ottoman quarter topped with a fort and Roman aqueduct. It made for an interesting, if expensive day out. We didn't take our boat to Kavalla because the pilot book said that the only available ...

Alexandroúpolis, Thrace, Greece leiks... we immediately realize we were at a dead end. So we turned around, and walked another 6km back to Dikella. Completely discouraged, dusty, sweaty and exhausted. We found a shady olive grove and set up camp and slept, only to wake up and take a bus back to Alexanderpouli. So, 2 nights after departing our dear Greek hosts we were still in their city! We forged on, hopped a bus to Komotini since the trail is supposed to pass through here. However, no ...
Farani, Greece pilgrimsaunter... shnitzel. Mushrooms stuffed with a parmesan like cheese, other wild picked shrooms topped with olive oil and more local cheese--- dear jesus were those things amazing. This is the type of meal where all utensils are abandoned as they inhibit eating. All of us sucking on our fingers, covered in charred bits of lamb, washing it all down with lemonade. And finishing with cooling watermelon. In one ...
Alexanderpolis, Greece pilgrimsaunter... cotton candy vendors, roasted corn sellers, children and pets were everywhere. A very festive atmosphere like you'd find in Latin America, complete with a little carnival with kiddie rides. The US should follow their example- return the roads to the people and make cars find another route. Next.... we aren't sure. Today we may head to the trail head, or we might stay another night with Christos and Georgia. Now to the yoghurt!
Alexanderpoli, Greece pilgrimsaunterLast chance to spend our Euros wýth our last nýght ýn Greece. Alexandroúpolis, Greece npointing... dressed entirely in black and with a headscarf, and continued to cross herself for the next 10 minutes. Another younger one also dressed entirely in black but in a more modern and "loose" way, she gave me a smile, flashing cracked teeth through the red lipstick, her eyes crusty with mascara. I settled down, ipod in my ears and face extraordinarily close to the ceiling, and soon fell asleep, rocking with the rhythm of the train. 6am in Thessaloniki held little but those croissants ...
