Greek Isles

... the time, but the earlier Byzantine city was extended and the walls fortified by the Knights of St John in the 14th and 15th centuries, creating the medieval city we see today.

The Old Town is included in UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. I grinned my way around the cobbled streets, magnificent buildings of the Knights of St John, a moat and walls with their ramparts, the Byzantine churches and mosques, the squares, the gardens and the courtyards of ...

Rhodes Old City and a treasure of a museum

... linking courtyards shaded by huge cypress trees and underpinned by lovingly pruned and cared for old lemon trees. A mixture of wonderful scents wafted around and we looked more closely at the gardens. We discovered the oversize shrubs, interspersed with the lemons, were basil and rosemary. Large detailed mosaics covering the floors and walls had been washed clean by the heavy rain. It was one of the most beautiful and peaceful courtyards I have ever been in.

Layed Back

Another beautiful day. Sunny 78 degrees on the island of Rhodes. We travel to Lindos half way down the island. To see the Acropolis were Paul spoke to the Greeks. A long climb to the top with a view to forever. Just outstanding. Back to the boat early to catch some sun by the pool.

I am going to upload a couple of pics from yesterday on Myconos to give you an idea of the beauty here.

Day trip to Rodos

... all we could of the castle, we ventured outside the walls to go check out some ancient ruins. On the map, there was a big green park with some old ruins labeled, and it didn't look too far away. What the map didn't show was that it was uphill, hard to find, and when we got there it wasn't a park at all, but just an ancient stadium and some old columns surrounded by ...

A nice little break on a long journey.

... a magnificent bronze statue of Helios, a Greek God. It was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. The statue only stood for 56 years before an earthquake destroyed it in 226BC.

The medieval town of Rhodes has now been declared a world heritage site. And no wonder with its winding old lanes, ancient defensive walls and its beautiful clear sky and water. We couldn't have afforded a night here but we sure are glad we got to spend a day in this touristy little town.

Medieval Times

The view was impressive upon stepping out of the boat. A castle wall surrounds the old part of the city where we docked - going almost to the waters edge. We walked through a shopping area, passing an old basilica on our way to the castle. The street leading towards the castle is called Knight's Street, and above the doorways are symbols and crests of the various knights that once lived and worked in Rhodes. The ...

Goodbye Europe

... br>After eating breakfast at the cafe we knew that this place was far too nice to just skip past. We were supposed to be going to Marmaris in Turkey, which would entail at least a one night stay. But we had been to poor old Marmaris two years ago on our honeymoon. It was the port where we had hopped onto a wooden Turkish gullet and sailed along the southern Mediterranean coast. But Marmaris has little to offer other than cheap tourist developments, tacky discos and ingratiating 'Tomy ...
