Beer Me!

... and sauerkraut. Didn't really care for the dumplings and sauerkraut but the goulash soup was great.

Then on to the brewery. Pilsner Urquell has been purchased by a conglomerate, the South African Brewers or SAB but Pilsner Urquell has also become their flagship as it is such a good beer. It was our misfortune to be there on a day when they were cleaning the lines in the bottling and ...

beer tourism...

I seemed to have developed a taste for beer on this trip (partly b/c it's too hot to drink wine!!) and no tour to Czech republic would be complete with a tour of the Pilsner Urquell brewery...

The town of Pilsner is fairly nondescript (ie/ it has no redeeming features, other than a summer installation of a pilsner beer garden and a bouncy ...

Visiting the Pilsner Urquell Brewery

Today we went to the Pilsner Urquell brewery in Plzen. Pilsner, the type of beer, originated here, where Pilsner Urquell was brewed from local crops and local mineral water. The tour was awesome. We saw the traditional brew kettles and the modern ones, as well as a very modern new packaging plant. We also tasted some unpastuerized beer directly from fermenting barrels.
Czech Republic

(76 miles) Slowing ourselves down has really helped us go longer while feeling like we are riding less. Today we entered the Czech Republic and found out that the roads are not as nice and little towns are run down. It's interesting the change. Everything is much cheaper here as well. We find ourselves dodging potholes more and eating out more. However so far I have taken less pictures ...

... charm, but with a patina of decay, the legacy of communism and several subsequent political unheavals. This country has one of the most fascinating political histories and we look forward to learning more as we explore. We are already crashing our way through Slavic Languages 101. I was getting a little cocky in Germany, where I was starting to get by pertty well after only a week, because there are enough similarities to English to start connecting dots. Well, THAT has certainly ...

Beer Fountains and Rivers of Ale? Yes Please.

... lake, but it was still a beer fairy tale complete with a life-size beer chess board. After taking us down into the basement where beer is still fermented in gigantic wooden kegs we were allowed to try unfiltered and unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell straight from the wooden barrels... it tasted like heaven. With each sip you heard a choir of angels singing, you may think I'm exaggerating but I implore you to go try it for yourself. You ...

... These are situated near the town of Beroun, about 30 km southwest of Prague. We decided to make Beroun our base camp and have been staying here. It is not the most traveler appealing town, but it does have inexpensive, nice lodging. So that has worked out. We tried to map out where to find these towns on the internet before we left because we had trouble locating them on any of the maps we had. We knew the basic direction we were heading and wandered until we found them ...

Christmas and more thoughts about Prague

... seemed like Christmas. Klugs were here for about a week. They went back to Bratislava on the 26. We had a wonderful time with them and saw some wonderful concerts. We saw a group called Chorea Bohemica at the theater where Mozart's Don Giovanni premiered in 1787. We also saw a small orchestra, chorus, and soloists perform a Christmas Mass by Ryba in the magnificent 17th century church of St. Nicholas. One day we went to the medieval towns of Chesky Krumlov and Chesky ...

Early days

... internet cafes. 27 October-Monday After breakfast of cereal, yogurt, juice, and fruit, we took the #9 down to get the Grey Line Tour we had bought tickets for yesterday. The bus held 18 people. The tour guide was speaking in German and Pidgin English-mostly German. She was really bad. All she could say in English is "This is a very beautiful gothic, high gothic, neo-gothic, renaissance, neo-renaissance, baroque, neo-baroque building. She could say nothing about the building ...
