... clusters of giant skyscrapers in all colours, shapes and sizes grace its shoreline, all the way from its neighbours, Sharjah in the north and Abu Dhabi to the south-west. Towering above them all is the slender Burj Khalifa thrusting its needle-top nearly a kilometre skywards to make it easily the tallest building on the planet.

For the tourist, all this dazzling newness is one of Dubai's greatest attractions. However, lying behind the ...

... And they are enlarging it! However it also has another aquarium and aquatic zoo, which gets a good write up on a Trip Advisor. Detecting a theme here? Anyway it was also very good, with the World's largest aquarium which has a massive viewing window and also a tunnel running through it so you can get impressively close to all the fish which includes a lot of sharks and rays. There was a good collection of other things aquatic up on a higher level ...

... The ticket counter for the Burj Khalifa was at the other end of the mall and took some finding. After picking up the tickets we had some lunch before returning at 1.15pm for our 1.30pm trip to the observation deck. The observation deck was on the 124th floor and the lift to the top took about a minute. At the top there was a 360 degree view over Dubai and it was there that you realised the place was in the desert. All the vacant lots were just sand ...
