Possibly the world’s tallest standing Buddha
Another attraction close to Monywa was what some say is the world's tallest standing Buddha. This record is however also said to be held by a Buddha in China, so which is taller I do not know. Thanboddhay Paya
As seems to be the case for me in Myanmar I was unexpectedly impressed, this time with Thanboddhay Paya – a temple I visited just outside of Monywa.
It was completely different to any temple I've ever seen. And though perhaps not what you might at first describe as beautiful, it certainly could be described and interesting and fun. Millions of tiny Buddha statues lined the walls both inside and out and everywhere was painted very colourfully ...

On my bus ride to Monywa I had Mr. Bean peeking out at me for the entire journey. Most of the newer buses here seem to be old Japanese busses. They’re actually more comfortable than the new Japanese buses in my opinion. The driving style however is not. The conductors on the buses here will generally hang right out of the doors as they go along, telling the driver when to overtake, to slow down, to speed up, to stop and pretty much anything ...
