        ... he comes back to say that they are printing the visas and it should be another ten minutes. Eventually, after nearly two hours, the immigration officer reappears with our passports and visas including a beautiful coloured visa with our photos inserted in our passports. We decide that the whole experience, while frustrating, was worth the cost of the visa as it gave us a real taste of third world Africa officialdom with lots of staff standing around ...

        The visit here wasn't a complete disaster though, there were a couple of good bits. One evening we visited the fish market for dinner: you wander round the market, pick out what you want to eat (fish, crabs, lobster, etc), then a nearby restaurant cooks it up for you for a small fee. Even though seafood isn't really my favourite, was a really fun evening out.

        Still, it was a relief to leave the city and head north to the beaches...

        ... bus terminal, we found out that we were supposed to have our visas all in order b/c they can't always wait for us once they've crossed the border. Since our initial plan had been to drive into Moçambique from S.A. and pay for visas on the spot (you're allowed to do that), we didn't have visas prepared in advance.
