... and Chinese art in most of Java.

Dinner was a ridiculously extensive menu of expensive things, but like the dirty backpackers we are, we ordered Nasi Goreng and shared a Bintang! Afterwards we had a wander around the hotel and saw Javanese most famous painting, lots of Ming China and a carved dragon statue that was over 3,200 years old- the detail was amazing considering how old it was.

Heading for an early night to try and get as much sleep as possible before our 1am ...

... having fun all the time Bromo looming in the distance. We got to the bottom of some stairs which lead up to the crater and said goodbye to our horses but Jesus it was good fun. In the end to avoid having to pay the outrageous hotel prices of nearly 50p for a 33cl bottle of water (see previous comment about reversion to student-esque behaviours) I ended up having to walk a three mile round trip, the return leg carrying 6 litres of water in 38 degree heat, but at just £1.20 for those 6 litres I think it’s clear that it was the smart decision! Our only worry is ...

Into the live volcano then into living hell!

... the sunrise over mount Bromo and its accompanying volcanoes. Joining a parade of other jeeps and motorbikes and hikers it was soon obvious that we were going to watch sunrise with a crowd of hundreds. The viewpoint was packed and we squeezed in a gap in the still pitch darkness. People were already taking photos of nothing; blackness filled the screens of their cameras and big iPads and phones as they snapped, but there was a growing hysteria even though sunrise was a good 20 minutes ...
