This last week has been all about early mornings and sunrises. We woke up a few hours after our last blog, and got the final things packed for our night hike up Gunung Agung, to get on top for sunrise. This hike starts at midnight, and you hike to the top in 5-6 hours to watch the sun rise around 6:30am. Because we were staying in Ubud, which is about 2 hours from the starting point, we had to be picked up at 10:30pm to arrive at the trailhead in time. It was a ...

... much and were so tired by then anyway. I'm pretty sure the hotel was owned by Cemero Lawang's mafia by the way... it all felt so weird. A creepy looking man sat outside our room for most of the night, selling woollen hats and scarves from a box.

... Cemoro Lawang would have had stunning views of Bromo if they had built the rooms facing the right direction. We find this a lot in Indonesia, they build without thought so they build hotels next to the road with 200m of wasteland between you and the beech and the restaurant area facing the road and not the beach? Here was the best example where the backs of everyone's porch faced the other rooms and not the spectacular view of the volcanoes. We think that they get ...

Paul and Dara Versus the Volcano

... is going to give way whenever the driver pulls out to cross a busy road. The main draw at the Sultan’s palace was talk of a shadow puppet show depicting the story of the Ramayana with a traditional musical accompaniment and Javanese narration. It all looked promising with a host of musical instruments and performers sitting behind the screen and its array of puppets, and we settled in when the music started and three puppet shadows appeared. The shadows then ...
