This last week has been all about early mornings and sunrises. We woke up a few hours after our last blog, and got the final things packed for our night hike up Gunung Agung, to get on top for sunrise. This hike starts at midnight, and you hike to the top in 5-6 hours to watch the sun rise around 6:30am. Because we were staying in Ubud, which is about 2 hours from the starting point, we had to be picked up at 10:30pm to arrive at the trailhead in time. It was a ...

... so we need to look for an alternative way to get to Probolinggo. The tried saying that all the hotels have guests check out at 9:30, and so we should wait until then...... no. ********. I ran off to Cafe Lava to find an alternative, and managed to find a driver that would take us for 200,000IDR (10). It was a pretty good deal considering the fact that the bus driver said he would take us there and then for 450,000IDR (23)... rather than waiting for the bus to fill up. But ...

The volcanoes slowly became lite up. Back in the jeep at 6.30am and off over the desert to mount Bromo to climb up it and look down into the crater. While driving over the desert we were suddenly surrounded by men on horses cantering alongside the jeep, loads of them, ...

... Cemoro Lawang would have had stunning views of Bromo if they had built the rooms facing the right direction. We find this a lot in Indonesia, they build without thought so they build hotels next to the road with 200m of wasteland between you and the beech and the restaurant area facing the road and not the beach? Here was the best example where the backs of everyone's porch faced the other rooms and not the spectacular view of the volcanoes. We think that they get ...

... of the potholes. Thankfully we hit good tarmac again after 15 minutes or so of descending and could cruise into the best hotel we had stayed in yet. Generally the quality of our accommodation had been rising since leaving West Java, and the Crown Victoria Hotel in Tulungagung was the pinnacle. Things were looking good from the moment you turned into the road leading to the hotel and there was a passable-looking fake Starbucks (Starqueen anyone?). In the reception they ...
