Rooms Need Renovation - Overpriced

We spent Memorial Day Weekend 2004 at the Monmouth B&B. We selected this B&B after the rave reviews on other B&B websites, as we like to stay in Small Luxury Hotels of the World, etc... We booked what we thought was a luxury room 6 months in advance since the reason we were in Natchez, MS was for a friend's wedding. The mature grounds and landscaping are beautiful, however, for the price of $230.00 per night for the General Quitman's Room #22 - it was anything but luxury. $230.00 was not commensurate of this historical B&B as it needed renovation. The King size mattress was at the end of it's useful life as you can tell it was flipped, and still sagged in the middle; very uncomfortable. The outdated 1980's bathroom, yes 1980's was inferior with worn particle board cabinetry not in line with the antique bedroom furnishing. Slow tub drain=filled up to ankles (gross), and loose pine floor boards at the bathroom threshold, dirty air vents, worn wallpaper with curled edges, dirty ironing board cover, and dirty iron with burnt calcium deposits on the iron plate. Some of the furniture just looked neglected, and not kept up to antique/finished quality. For a circa 1818 interior design look, the velvet curtains should not have been tied back using cheap .79cent cup hooks...this is certainly not vintage. It just looked like they tried to cut corners in decorating with furniture and fabrics.

The management told us the day we checked out that our Room #22 is planned for renovation a couple of weeks after we left. The Staff is the BEST for customer service, and Hal will get you anything you need! Hats off to Hal! I would not return here unless I could stay in the owners quarters which is called the Quitman's Retreat = now you know if the owners come here every other week from California, they stay in the best room. Why not have all your rooms as the small luxury standard at those prices. PS... Complimenary Hoursd'oeuvres was just a platter of cheese & crackers! Other Small Luxury Hotels we have stayed, all have delivered the luxury experience: The Greenbriar in West Virginia, The Driskill in Austin, TX, CheecaLodge in Fla Keys, Williamburg Inn, in VA.

Monmouth plantation

After tens years of meeting my Mother in the "Old South" every spring, I thought we had seen almost every Plantation BandB. If you want to meet the sweetest, most helpful, people. See flowers and gardens that Monet would have loved to paint. Rooms that are not only clean, but have a million little extra touches. Actually a world unto itself, don't go to Monmouth. Leave it all to me and my Mother. It's the best kept secret of the South. We will be back every year Monmouth. You set the standard for all other Bed and Breakfasts. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to spend time with you.

Great personal service at Monmouth

Monmouth excels at the personal touches that make a weekend get-away feel like a week's vacation. The staff is very attentive and helpful, and we were delighted with fresh hot coffee in our room every morning, not to mention cocktails on the beautiful patio. The property is a gem, with a lovely setting and wonderful gardens. Don't miss it.

We Love Monmouth!!!!

We have been to Monmouth so many times that we should have paid for our room by now. We prefer the pond cottage for the view of the pond and the front porch. We are always "in Heaven" when we are at Monmouth. The staff is always so friendly and attentive to our needs. We get champagne in our room most times. The food is above excellent. The full southern breakfast is always delicious. We have stayed at other places in Natchez if our room was booked, but we always prefer Monmouth Plantation. If you are thinking of staying in Natchez, check out Monmouth. It is so peaceful and restful you will want to come back the next weekend.

Monmouth What a Gem!!

We Just Left Monmouth Planation. Monmouth is So Lovely. The Grounds are magnificent. We ate at the General's Table the second night. The Experience was fantastic. We met people from France and Germany and from down the road in Metairie. One Couple had been here 10 times with plans to return! That says more than any review. We had romantic fireplace, a lovely bathroom with the highest quality ammenties I have ever seen, and a gift from the owners for our Anniversary! I can not speak highly enough about the staff. From the minute we got out of our car to the minute we drove away someone on staff was smiling and taking care of our every wish. We even had a massage in our room. I have never been so relaxed. Nothing in Natchez Compares to Monmouth. we have been up there 4 times and stayed other places We will stay at Monmouth on our return trips. Go See for yourself its just great.

The romantic south lives again!!

I wanted to write you after my wonderful stay at Monmouth Plantation in Natchez, MS. It is, without doubt, one of the finest and most beautifully appointed bed and breakfasts I have ever experienced. My room, number 45, was complete with fireplace and jacuzzi. The romance of the the old South again came alive for me in this genuine, period atmosphere. The view, the funishings and the tremendous staff service made it difficult to leave. Each evening was made complete by a multi-choice five-course dinner that was second to none. Again, I cannot say enough about the instinctive hospitality of the Monmouth staff and management. They remembered every detail! We strolled about the the beautifully manicured grounds at all times of the day and evening. My hat is off to the staff for the personal attention that we received there.

Not worth it!!

Stayed at Monmouth during the Valentine's Day weekend. Very disappointing! The room in which we stayed was the Riches suite. For over $300 a night this is what we found....no robes in the room as promised....no jacuzzi as advised.....and a roach crawling atop the antique table in the room. Not very pleasant. The southern breakfast left a bit to be desired! Although the grounds were very pretty, the staff was friendly, and the history it holds is remarkable, Monmouth is overated and over priced!

Bathroom dingy, our view bad, breakfast average not worth the price

I stayed at the Monmouth on Feb. 13th 2004, in the Riches suite for over 300 dollars after tax. We found a roach in the room upon arrival.

The robes that were advertised for the room were not present and had to be called for. The staff did bring the robes promptly when we called.

We had a view of the columns of the house from one window, view of the parking lot from another window, and a view of the roof of the gift shop from the other window. The jacuzzi tub that was described to me on the phone was not in the room. There were two regular tubs and each of them was old and quite dingy. The breakfast the next morning was average at best. I will have to say the grounds are beautiful outside, the tour guide is well informed, and the decor in the mansion is nice but would not recommend you stay there if other options are available.

The Riverside on 211 clifton ave. is wonderful. You might try there. We stayed there the next night.

Have to agree

Have to agree with previous review. We were there in May 2003. Grounds are lovely, but our room in the main house "wing" area needed some work (especially the bathroom). Home is nice, but not as impressive as others in the area. Breakfast is the same every morning and nothing special: eggs, grits, ham or bacon. Dinner served in the main house is "communal seating" which we were unaware of (and found not to be very romantic for a anniversary dinner!). Staff was pleasant to outstanding, though next time we'll try Dunleith.

Not worth the price

The setting of this hotel is just beautiful. The plantation house is magnificent and very impressive. The grounds are lovely. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room had some interesting features -- fireplace, some antiques. However, it really wasn't worth the quite high price we paid -- the mattress was too small for the bed, and the bathroom needed some maintenance.
