Bright and early I get ready for the coolest trip ever... I'm going to hop on a plane in Wellington and cross over to Picton, on the south island, where I'm supposed to sky dive into the airport, just like James Bond! Only problem was that the weather didn't cooperate... Instead, I have to hop on the Interislander Ferry and make the three hour cross through the Queen Charlotte Sound. The trip is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous but there is a thick fog that destroys most of the panoramic vi...
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand madman96I take the morning to explore the coast line and find so much more. I stop at Rabbit Island for a walk on the beach and relax on the beach to read my guide book a bit. I head to a weekend market in Motueka and wind up running into the last person I ever thought I'd see there... JORGE!!! So, as the story goes, it turns out that Jorge hadn't been monkey-napped at all but had run into one of his best friends, Donkey. The two of them had a little too much to drink and got lost in paradise for a w...
Nelson, New Zealand madman96DAY 20 Well, they lied! Today's was just as long a drive as yesterday - 300 km and most of it on mountain roads. After a great breakfast in Hokitika we got away about 9.30am and took the coast road north which gave us the most spectacular views of a rugged coastline which I imagine is rather like the California/Pacific highway. The weather was not good until we stopped off at the Pancake Rocks which are hard to describe but are layer upon layer of rocks so look like layers of pancakes. Actual...
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand maxnstanDAYS 21, 22 and 23 Hi everyone - well I'm writing this a day after we finished our walk and I know it's going to be hard to put into words the absolutely amazing experience we had. I think we might be addicted. Most of the first morning was spent getting ready for the walk, going to the tour operator's office to pick up our backpacks (that was one of my biggest worries never having carried a pack before) and driving across a VERY windy road to get put down on a beach. There were 4 couples sig...

... by hills, massive trees and the river. The next morning we went White Water Rafting which was SUPER cold, but very fun! We were on the river for about 3 hours. This river is grade 5 meaning it's the highest level of rafting which can be operated commercially. No one fell out, so it was all good. From River Valley we headed to Wellington, which is the capital city as well as the windest city, which proved to be true ...
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand brettandjen... of our car as the sky continued to crash down on us, sitting there we got a text from Stevie’s friend inviting us down to Hastings for chilli - at that point in time a warm bed and a bowl of chilli sounded like an invite from God so we braved the weather and the treacherous mountain road and went down to sit in Dermot and Vanessa’s house for a few days to brave out the weather. Our days down there were really lovely - we sat in front of the fire, drank wine and ...
Abel Tasman National Park, South Island, New Zealand kikiblogtrotAbel Tasman National Park is named for the Dutch explorer who first discovered New Zealand. this national park in a word is "stunning" (and eunice's favorite of the trip so far). it is located on the northwest corner of NZ's south island. it encompasses a large mountian region plus a marine reserve filled with seals, stingrays and a variety of fish. it is also home to one of NZ's Great Walks (this also includes the likes of the Milford Track, Kepler Track ...
Abel Tasman National Park, South Island, New Zealand euniceandbyoung... from the way he talks that he holds the place very dear to him. One thing I've noticed is that everyone has an opinion about their natural environment here in New Zealand. I guess this is probably slightly skewed because of the circles I've been moving in but there seems to be genuine knowledge and debate about issues of the environment in New Zealand. I can't imagine there being debates at a general level over which type of poison is best to be used to reduce the ...
Abel Tasman National Park, South Island, New Zealand travellingjools... tours/trips. The campsite is beautiful, it's like a different world, such a special and unique place for its beauty. We booked a kayak trip for tomorrow then went for a walk along the first part of the Abel Tasman track to Stu's Lookout. It was getting late and so there wasn't much time to do anything so we headed back to camp just before sunset.
