On to the south island

Bright and early I get ready for the coolest trip ever... I'm going to hop on a plane in Wellington and cross over to Picton, on the south island, where I'm supposed to sky dive into the airport, just like James Bond! Only problem was that the weather didn't cooperate... Instead, I have to hop on the Interislander Ferry and make the three hour cross through the Queen Charlotte Sound. The trip is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous but there is a thick fog that destroys most of the panoramic vi...

The return of Jorge!

I take the morning to explore the coast line and find so much more. I stop at Rabbit Island for a walk on the beach and relax on the beach to read my guide book a bit. I head to a weekend market in Motueka and wind up running into the last person I ever thought I'd see there... JORGE!!! So, as the story goes, it turns out that Jorge hadn't been monkey-napped at all but had run into one of his best friends, Donkey. The two of them had a little too much to drink and got lost in paradise for a w...

DAY 20

DAY 20 Well, they lied! Today's was just as long a drive as yesterday - 300 km and most of it on mountain roads. After a great breakfast in Hokitika we got away about 9.30am and took the coast road north which gave us the most spectacular views of a rugged coastline which I imagine is rather like the California/Pacific highway. The weather was not good until we stopped off at the Pancake Rocks which are hard to describe but are layer upon layer of rocks so look like layers of pancakes. Actual...

DAY 21, 22 and 23

DAYS 21, 22 and 23 Hi everyone - well I'm writing this a day after we finished our walk and I know it's going to be hard to put into words the absolutely amazing experience we had. I think we might be addicted. Most of the first morning was spent getting ready for the walk, going to the tour operator's office to pick up our backpacks (that was one of my biggest worries never having carried a pack before) and driving across a VERY windy road to get put down on a beach. There were 4 couples sig...

Hitching

... from the other guys and stuck 15 km from the nearest town. So we started walking.

We decided we would try to hitch, but since so few cars came down the road we were on we would also keep walking so that if we didn't catch a ride we would at least be able to find somewhere to stay by making it to a town. We walked probably about 5 km before deciding to wait for a while to see if more cars would pass since we had passed other roads ...

New Zealand's North Island - what a place!

... boarded the ferry - Destination South!

At the moment I am sitting in a big comfy chair in the living room of a hostel right beside the Abel Tasman National Park, the fire is lit - I have a cup of tea beside me, the sun is shining in the window, and chimes gently sing out their tune out on the Verandah. We have been in the South Island now for two nights, we have found a hostel called ‘The Barn’ where we are allowed to park up for free and use all their ...

So many Vinyards & zero tastings

Day 3 - Wed 25th Feb 2009 Another strange night of sleep. Was it the beds? The morning was dull and drizzly. But I have to say the rented gear was keeping me dry and warm. A little after 10 we headed of North, Route 6. Leaving the wine basin we worked round pine coated mountains with their tips covered in cloud. There was, as yesterday, mainly older wooden homes some with tin sheds that had their Southerly facing roof covered in moss. On the other ...

Christmas in Abel Tasman

... where we got on our kayaks - we're experts now- and decided to go see some seals! Seals can abundantly be seen from a nearby island. As we approached the island not only could we see some lazing out on the rocks, but we could also smell them! Not pleasant. Apparently we caught them at mating season so the musk that the males give out actually attracts females. Moreover, we found out that some male seals live what many men describe the ...

Abel Tasman Track

... beach was beautiful and empty. Me & mummy were thinking of daddy because we reckon he would have really loved it. The water was crystal clear and if we'd had more time mummy might even have had a bit of a paddle! In the afternoon we found out what the water sandals were for! Mummy had to wade across an estuary. The water came up over everyone's knees and a little lady called Shirley had it coming up to the top of her thighs she was so sort! Mummy judged ...
