... but it’s closed - it looks unsafe. The new Cathedral is impressive and has lovely floors and mosaics - it’s not as ornate as the basilica on the hill, which we preferred! We found a chapel dedicated to Eugene de Mazenod who was born in nearby Aix-en-Provence - he founded the religious order which runs many schools, including Mazenod College in Perth.

The city is charming and is the home of Cezanne's art studio. If we lean out of the window
we can see Mount Victoire which plays a big part in many of Cezanne's paintings.

The city is also known for having wonderful markets most days of the week.

Arrived to a dead & black alley; awoke to a market-place. It was Saturday morning after all. Found the local map with 3 historic walking trails, and as the old town is tiny, did two of them; and included the hike up to Notre Dame de la Garde. ... a great time although it was very hot and the sun glare was unpleasant....but better than winter in Melbourne.

On the way home, the trusty navigator routed us through Salon de Provence. I was sure we'd been there before but no...well worth the stop, although their version of iced coffee was very odd and had a big swig of almond syrup ...yuck.

... yesterday, and they are so delicious, tender and sweet! I ate them for breakfast. They are red all the way through! We ventured out for breakfast and found some wonderful brioche (my very favorite bread in France!), croissants to die for, and some sort of pastry for John. He wouldn't try the coffee, though, as the cups are the size of the mouthwash cups in the dentist's office and pretty strong.
