Tiwi, Coast, Kenya miles1... Even better, this particular camel (named Charlie Brown) was a real love. Unchariteristically of most camels who spit nasty blobs of black emissions at people between gnarly growls, Charlie Brown nuzzled nose to nose with us, and solicited every scratch we were willing to give him on his face, neck and brow. Talia and I couldn't wait! We were the first to negotiate a fair price and embark upon the camel ride of our lives! <br ...
Mombasa, Coast, Kenya matanyashope... the whole coastline, was considered a crime by Christian countries, it was not so regarded by the Muslim countries. It was the putting down of the slave trade, passionately and actively campaigned for by Queen Victoria's 'empire builders', that finally put an end to Mombasa's bloodier history and diverted energies and enthusiasms into more progressive channels. Providing slaves for France's overseas possessions - Ile de France (Mauritius) and Bourbon ...
Mombasa, Kenya amandab9375... around with them. if you want to know where we are working and what we see everyday , watch slumdog millionaire, we watched it this weekend and were moved by the scenes in the film ,because this is what we see everyday here. Last night we persuaded a kid addicted to glue to swap his glue bottle for food, chicken and chips and he loved it, but we all know its a short term win as there is a family unit that exists on the streets, he saved some ...
Mombasa, Kenya michelle02... he took me through the city of Mombasa to the area outside the city where we were staying, Diani Beach. HM had booked us into a place called stilts, you will see a pic of our little hut on stilts below. I thought is was quite cute.....at first! The first night I was so tired from all the traveling that I slept really well. Of course there was plenty of catching up and giggling between myself and HM. The next morning I woke up to cute monkeys running across our porch and ...
Mombasa, Kenya heatherlindsay... Kenyan shillings and the conversion rate is about 65 shillings to $1 CAD. That is by far the most expensive thing we've bought so far. For example, the internet cafe works out to about 50 shillings for half an hour - as you know I'm not very good at calculations on the spot but you do that math and you'll be amazed! The main form of transportation is matatus or tuk tuks which are both awesome and terrifying at the same time. Matatu's are the mini ...

Mombasa, Kenya gez_skip... I paid 20 pin (TSh 20 000) for the expensive ticket. I had pre-booked my seat, right up front behind the driver. At first I was sat next to an Asian businessman, but he was soon replaced by 'Islamic Jihad'. I had seen this lanky Arab nervously puffing on a cigarette before boarding the bus. He was carrying nothing except his passport and a book called 'Divine Justice' I grew more paranoid as the trip progressed, as we hadn't said a word to each ...
Mombassa, Kenya dcm... for a visiting nation. The marine exhibition was fascinating, with a dugong, coelacanth and most sea creatures displayed suspended in formaldehyde (pretty disgusting). While waiting for the ferry back to Kigamboni, I visited the fish market. Hygiene was nonexistent and the accompanying rotten smells were giving me uncontrollable heaving. There were some weird sea creatures on offer. The ferry was quite an experience - the actual journey only lasted 15 minutes ...
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania dcm... were full. Not expecting to fly we had not "configured for aviation", i.e., shifted the pocketknife, syringes, scalpels, cigarette lighters and cutlery out of my day-bag. The security lady tried to confiscate it. I explained wanted to get it into my luggage (which I could see and which we would be carrying to the plane anyway and which would be in the cabin of the aircraft with us since there was actually no luggage hold) because I was not traveling in Africa without ...
