Gustavo needs to return the car in Brasov by noon while I am moving North. He has a couple of hours so we get up early and do the quick tour. Great small town but has major road reconstruction under way. Tractors are digging everywhere.

It is a Saxon town which means German is spoken in many places such as sermons in the church. It has lots of pretty buildings, nice fortification. A climb to the top of the tower offers great views of the city ...

The train is about an hour late, killing our attempt to see Rasnov castle that afternoon. Instead, we explore Brasov. I had been expecting it to be well into the mountains but instead it is along a flat plain at the base of the mountains, much like Denver. It is a great mix of old town, good restaurants and bars. I treat myself to a really good bottle of Romanian wine (yes the whole bottle since Gustovo does not drink, as I found out).

There are even Andean musicians there, playing for tips and selling CD’s. Rooms are so scarce that one lady hangs out at the bus and train station ...

In 1998 we paid £280 for a week's skiing in Poina Brasov complete with ski hire, lift pass and tuition! The transfer from the airport was long and arduous but the hotel was a pleasant surprise. Our room had MTV and some kind of animal skin blanket which weighed a ton and pinned you to the bed at night.
