Wow, Mmmm, Amazing !

These are the three most commonly words uttered by my today - Wales is just amazing - the scenery, the people, the food and the beer (from Josh!)

Well today started early, with being picked up by our tour guide from our hostel. We set out from Cardiff to Caerphilly, a small town with an amazing castle - there are over 400 castles in Wales! One tower at Caerphilly castle was attacked thousands of years ago ...

24 hours to go - time to panic

Bike is in car ready for packing tomorrow.

Lots of advice about padded shorts and Vaseline! - Is there something I should know?

Will post some pictures as soon as we get underway, and keep you up to date with the events as they occur.

Waiting for my Soul

... are you doing?" asked his travelling companion. "We have much to do!"

The Indian shrugged and remained seated.

"I am waiting for my soul to catch up with me," he said.

This is how I feel today. My soul is out there somewhere, and it needs time to catch up.

Looking forward to France

I've started using the travelpod blog to document my various travels. It all looks pretty good at the moment but it's early days.

Looking forward to seeing my mum in France early Sept. Going over for a week to sunny St. Chinian in southern France, see map for location. Got a great bargain on the plane fair, £20 return from Bristol, the actual flight was zero pounds but Ryanair charged me £20 for paying on my credit card !

Bon Voyage

... another time (maybe Gaz-lj part 2).
Something that has only just sunk in now that we are 2 days away from leaving is the impact us leaving for 6 months has on family and friends. It didn't really come up during the planning but thankfully everywhere we plan to go has really good internet access so we'll be keep in touch more than if we lived around the corner.

So we've both jacked our jobs in, moved out of our penthouse flat on the marina next stop Heathrow

100km of dirt

... Beast.

I was up early and it was cool and misty as I arrived at the sports ground where the race was to start. There were already lots of riders there, so I started with lots of people in front of me and had to do quite a lot of overtaking on the first 10km road section toward Fan Gihyrich then, a big, long climb. The trails around here are often scattered with big rocks, some twice the size of breeze blocks, so it certainly ...

Arrival, anticipation...

... in the Bull's Head then dinner at the George, a fairly large pub with a beer garden where I had ******s and mash: traditionally welsh but maybe not the typical pre-race meal. Later, a pint at the Boar's Head and an early night. In retrospect, that's not really the ideal preparation for an enduro, but it was a nice evening.

DAY 17 FRI This morning we drove from Oxford to Newnham to see Uncle David. We talked to him for about half an hour before his carer, Sheila, turned up to help him with his accounts. While he was in a great deal of pain due to his nerve problem, he was very friendly and I was glad Margaret had been able to meet one of my English relatives. We strolled around The Green, which is immediately across the lane from David's house and admired the view of the quilted fields ...
