We packed up the tent in the rain and drove to Port Hardy where we were happy to check into a hotel. We took a walk at the Quatse River Estuary where we saw lots of birds, including Belted Kingfisher, Canada Geese, Sandpiper, Bald Eagles, and Robins. We also went to the Port Hardy museum which had lots of interesting historic memorabilia.
Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada moorefamilySurprise surprise we woke to fair weather! We packed a lunch and drive to Cape Scott Provincial Park. By the road on the way there we spotted a mother black bear and her two cubs, several deer, a marten and a house cat in the middle of nowhere. All along the road were signs giving years that individual stands of trees had been planted or thinned. We parked and hiked a 2.5 km trail through the forest to San Josef Bay. After that we went to Cape Palmerstone for another short hike. On the way ho...
Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada moorefamilyAgain, we got up bright and early to catch the Ferry. This time it was the ferry that traversed the Inside Passage from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. The ferry left at 7:30 am and arrived at 10:30 pm. Fortunately it was a nice day for the scenic trip. We spent the night at the Moby Dick Hotel in Prince Rupert.

... the night. We anchored in Klu Bay. It was pretty and protected and there was only one other boat. We anchored in 68 feet. Tim dropped the crab pot in off the boat and quickly got four nice dungeness crabs. While unloading the pot one of the crabs clamped on to Tim’s finger and wouldn’t let go. Ouch! We showed the crab who was boss and had him for dinner.

Monday, Aug 3

We left Klu Bay heading for Fitzgibbon Cove. It was sunny and warm ...
Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada mvpandora... check engine” light on, we headed for 100 Mile House, where we believed there to be a Subaru dealer. There wasn't, so we pushed on to Williams Lake but by this time the car was behaving itself again. We tried not to not worry about the car so much that we didn’t enjoy the drive – the dry country changed again to lovely marshy lakes and tablelands and we spotted a few deer and birds on the way.

We camped overnight at McLeese Lake right on the ...
Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada sarzmc... hydrophone. I explained to Debbie that a hydrophone was used to listen to the whales to which she replied "Can you talk down it?". Ever since then we have been trying to communicate with the whales by talking very slowly (as seen in Finding Nemo) Debs: This is highly unfair! I didn't mean can you talk to people or whales on it, in fact I don't know what I meant, it was just one of those this that falls out of your mouth before your brain engages (this happens to me a lot!). Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada timdabunny... I had not slept well during the last three nights on the Alaska Ferries. That seemed to catch up with me during my 700 km drive from Prince Rupert to Prince George. Incredibly, I stopped four times during this drive for a nap and each time I slept for more than an hour - that's four hours of sleep during this drive. The last time was near New Hazelton where I made a U-turn into a rest stop to take a nap. Upon awakening I launched into my drive back home by ...
Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada mokoToday we embarked on the Alaska Marine Highway, which is to say the ferry system. It's amazing. We built our own cruise line. We have three stops in exciting ports of call (Sitka, Juneau and Haines) and transport for me, mom, Bucket and the truck for a little less than a grand. While we were in line for the ferry we met some nice folks from Harrisburg (Walt and Betty- see pictures). We talked to them about their trip ...
Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada il_chambero... boats and cruise ships to Alaska. After lunch the fog lifted, and the rest of the cruise was between the mainland and islands, with pine forest on steep rocky slopes. The trip was long, and we took the opportunity to catch up on some sleep, along with bouts on the aft-deck looking at the scenery. The ferry berthed at Prince Rupert at 10.30pm and we caught a taxi to the Crest Hotel, which is the best in town, right on the harbour's edge. We woke to another thick fog, and the ...
