... but eggs are not refrigerated, all milk is 4% fat, and they don't have triscuits - I'm in trouble! Also, Jessie and Nicki, the shopping is amazing - so many really cute stores - I just can't afford anything haha

On our first night, they took us out to fondue and wine, which is their staple here. The cheese fondue was intense - very sharp, but a fun experience and then we devoured a bunch of meat fondue! Also, a lot of people speak ...

      1733. Where the Valleys Meet

Day 283 2 hrs, 4.4 kms Day totals: 16 hrs, 44.4 kms Dusk is settling in as I continue on through the forest. The valley is widening below and I can spot multiple villages scattered on the peaks, slopes and valleys of various hills in this larger valley civilization, centered around the city of Landeck. It strikes me a little odd that I don't really feel the burning desire to explore these villages. As a matter of fact, as I think of the days ahead, really all I want ...

      1732. A very un-Austrian Bridge

Day 283 4 hrs, 8 kms Strengen has a peculiar landmark: a covered bridge that looks like a bunch of random pieces of lumber attached together, all crooked, looking like it could fall over at any time. Just seems really out of place here in Austria where everything it seems is made to perfection. Does look pretty cool ...

Day 283 2 hrs, 7 kms The valley continues. A narrowing strip of lush green grass surrounded by wooded slopes and cliffs, interrupted by classic Alpine villages with large, immaculately decorated chalets... But they're not all independent towns, so I can only count one of them. The trail markings aren't as good as in Switzerland (here I am, comparing again!) and I end up at a dead ...

      1730. A New Valley Civilization

, Day 283 2 hrs, 8 kms After St Anton, the atmosphere changes dramatically from fancy touristy towns to very authentic farm villages. The valley doesn't get very wide, but it's enough for folks to grow grass and feed their dairy cattle. Another thing I notice here in Austria are a lot of women out in the fields doing very physically demanding tasks like raking and tossing hay with large rakes. But they ...
