Sunny Seaside Towns and Whitsunday Islands

Still excited after completing the diving on the Great Barrier Reef we left Cairns and drove towards Mission Beach. Enroute we passed through Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine National Parks stopping to take in the gorgoeus views of the volcanic craters. We followed a tourist drive to four waterfalls - Malanda, Milaa Milaa, Zille and Ellinjaa where we did short walks to get close up to the water and cool down in the spray. The final fall had small turtles climbing onto the rocks so the climb down ...

... and more tropical as we got into the hills. Stopped and swam in a warm lake and saw my first kangaroos jumping away. Checked out a waterfall... very disappointing in the dry season. Down the mountains back towards mission beach after that. Saw a long shooting star before bed.

Mission Beach

... At this stage the friends buried the body and built a large cairn over it using large local volcanic rocks. They also placed a cast metal plaque marking the grave of the said Sidney Harris. Each friend donated a post and another donated some chain to fence the cairn off. Later this site became part of the caravan site we were staying on and the cairn was broken down; the plaque being moved to a location ‘behind the community hall’. Later still, the ...

Hi to all,

On the way up from Townsville we stopped at Cardwell for a quick road side pie and another stop in Ingham to walk around the streets before arriving at our exciting destination. We arrived in Mission Beach intending to stay only for a few days and ended up staying nearly a week. We have finally found our piece of paradise, with its palm fringed beaches and its undeveloped town centre.

We found ...

... likeable city, world glass wine regions (my Mecca's, of which i inevitably paid my pilgrimage to...a few times), all on the doorstep and to top it off, great lengths of beautiful coastline.
So i take it all back. I thought it was all very agreeable place to stay for a while. However my travel instincts of wanting to move forward kicked in, and with winter and rain soon approaching, i was itching to move onwards to newer ventures and a more agreeable climate. Once ...

A Day of Intense Rafting

... us to go home. We weren't swayed from coming, and the excitement seemed to build even though the sunshine did not. We were given some basic rafting instructions and then headed to our boat for a crash course in rafting. The bright yellow boat seemed smaller than I had imagined, but the eight of us climbed in with a smile on our face and a hint of fear in our eyes. Marty, our river guide, tried to teach us how to raft as a team and brave the thrilling waters together ...
