Sunny Seaside Towns and Whitsunday Islands

Still excited after completing the diving on the Great Barrier Reef we left Cairns and drove towards Mission Beach. Enroute we passed through Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine National Parks stopping to take in the gorgoeus views of the volcanic craters. We followed a tourist drive to four waterfalls - Malanda, Milaa Milaa, Zille and Ellinjaa where we did short walks to get close up to the water and cool down in the spray. The final fall had small turtles climbing onto the rocks so the climb down ...

No Nakedness today, thankfully...

... but we had used a payphone and warned them that the bus was running late. No worries they stayed open late for us and we got checked in just fine. Accomodation has definitly improved since we have moved more north. After dumping our bags and went to the bar for some food and some cool beer as the weather i hate to rub in to everyone back home but it is really scorching hot with most days not a cloud in the sky.

Definitely Rain Forest

... bit of sunning. This morning awoke to heavy rain - well it is the rain forest and they haven't had any for a couple of months so hopefully this isn't the start of it! Dried up by the time we'd had a nice breakfast with our Canadian 'twitchers'. Cassowary and baby circling our car this morning - fancy a change from the red one - looking at our yellow one instead. Mission Beach is not busy - you can say that again - definitely not ...

Day 260-267 Mission Beach

... with this boy for a few days and he loved playing with somebody a little older.

All of the time we’d enjoyed on the beach during our time here was idyllic. We had perfect weather, unlike our friends who had been here weeks earlier and spent most of their time dodging downpours.

We couldn’t extend our stay any further, we needed to meet the Corky’s in Airlie Beach to ready ourselves for our sailing adventure in the Whitsundays….

Townsville to Tully To Mission Beach

... immediately to drive though the rainforest towards the coast again and Mission beach. We were continually reminded of the cassowary in the area by the road signs and speed limits…The road cut through the rain forest and it was easy to understand how the infamous cassowary would ...

Insanity

... did provide was access to insanity. Eric and I signed away our lives, told Michelle we were organ donors and planned to board a plane which was bound to land without us. We were going to skydive. For days I was adamant about doing a quick 15 second freefall, while risky Rico was set on a full 60 seconds. However upon spending a steep $150 on a photographer that was to jump alongside me and capture each stupid second, I was quickly persuaded to freefall ...

Rafting in the Rainforest

... the least it was pretty intense and a really amazing experience so i wouldn't want to put anyone off from rafting. Unfortunately the camera guy was not filming at the time or I'm guess there would be some amazing footage. Right now we are preparing for Tarrah's big birthday party on the beach. We just picked up a keg cooler and about $100 worth of meat so it looked to be a pretty good time. Hopefully I'll update again when I'm at Magnetic Island in about 5 days.

Adelaide to Dunk Island

... something at the till. This generally gets a look, as If you had just sodomised his pet kitten in front of him. It does seem that this area of Australia and its people are lacking in certain life skills, albeit anything vaguely resembling any form of basic civility, or use of a brain. I guess it could be comparable to the Deep South in the USA. Don’t get me wrong, I love Australia and a lot of its people, I just feel that certain pockets (just like anywhere I ...

Sanctuary

... Sanctuary - I arrived and just chilled at the open, airy, ambience filled reception area (the long house) which looks out over the forest to the Coral Sea and the ocean leading out to the Great Barrier Reef. I had a "few" beers in the long house that evening. I'd fallen in love with this place within hours and extended my 2 day stay to 4 days - deciding to spend more time here and give Magnetic Island a miss. More Water Next day - I walked up around ...

Drive to Mission Beach

... The front door was also locked. We were locked out with all door keys and car keys inside. Fortunately, the rental agents were only one block away. So Steve legs it in the pouring rain with no shoes (they were in the house too!). In the evening, it still raining, we took the car to investigate the various restaurants (only 5 minutes walk away) and came back with take away scallops, prawns, Thai fish cakes and chips to eat in the house.
