... The Avenue of the Giants with the redwoods towering over us. To get up close and personal, there are many trails you can take just off the side of the road. The particular one we chose meant bumping into a couple who we recognised from breakfast at the motel. They happened to come from East London, so we spent a slightly surreal half hour chatting to them with the redwoods all around. Our walk was short but enough ...

... trees. Following the Russian River we entered the wine country of Sonoma and vineyards stretched from the highway to the horizon. ... carry them around for a year or two until finally I lose them, or toss them in a new campground. Not sure a pine tree from the north west can live in Texas but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

And on an even brighter note, we became really good friends with Gene and Janet, relatives somehow with somebody in this group but blood never matters, they're close family after this hellish job! ...

Getting Off the Path: The Lost Coast

... off and we headed to Black Sands Beach, the gateway to the Lost Coast 24 mile backpacking trail. We spent a beautiful afternoon watching the waves crash on the shore and reading our books. We had the beach pretty much to ourselves the whole time, except when one local strolled by and said, "It's not too often you get to wear a bathing suit in Shelter Cove!" With this comment we smiled, realizing we really lucked out on the weather. When the sun ...
