Day 289 - Alberobello & the East Coast
... Gelato despite the wet and chilly weather.
HISTORY:
The seaside fort, the Castello Svevo (Swabian Castle) loomed large in the poorly lit night as the rain misted about. It had been a strategic location since 1132. Across a large cobblestoned piazza (town square) was the old city. The glow from the sparse and dim streetlights was filtered by the extremely humid air affording a gloomy and at times slightly dodgy atmosphere ...

... Very simple and old-worldly. I found a side-street restaurant in the Old Town and had a hearty seafood meal (again). Two courses were more than ample for me, and I was amazed by the couple next to me who went through about 7-8 plates-full of all kinds of seafood! The group of four men in front of me also seemed to have everything on the menu - twice! My 2 courses washed down with some fizzy water and a 1/2-litre of red wine cost €17. Great!

Ferry Mayhem
Today we left Naples early, on a 6.20am bus bound for the port of Brindisi. We had tickets for the overnight ferry to Greece. After three weeks in Italy, we were looking forward to a new country and new culture. But three hours into our five hour journey we get a call – it’s the ferry company, telling us our ferry has been cancelled. Not really what we wanted to hear!

Trani - more than meets the eye
(S) Sometimes when you're traveling, you decide to make quick detours to see random things which were not on your "to do" list. This was one of those. We were a bit sad we were done with our "European church" visiting, so I consulted the trusty 6 year old Lonely Planet to see what was on our route. C'est ici que vis ma famille (enfin une partie). C'est une ville très agréable le long de la mer adriatique, par contre c'est pas du tout touristique, ici on ne vous harcèle pas pour vous forcer à acheter des souvenirs ou autre. Ici c'est détente avec la plage qui vient d'être réaménagée. Sachez aussi que dans cette ville les magasins ferment de 11h à 17h. Et oui il fait chaud, la ville s'arrête, je parle bien sur en ...
