... Apparently way back when there was this Senegalese army general who failed to execute some mission and was exhiled to this island. The rumor is that he built a little room to live in and a “spirit” on the island destroyed it. He apparently tried to rebuild the room and it the next day the top half was again destroyed. Obviously there is no way to prove this but it’s a cool story. He later died on the island… ...
Mostraram-me ...
Mbour, La Petite Côte, Senegal ikono... programs in different countries.

And now we're back in our "training wheels" village. This is our last week here before we take off for good on Mon (nov 3) to have a few more days of classes before swearing in on the 7th. In between Wolof class I've managed to spend some quality time with the family. Here's a great Africa moment: Last Sunday as I was walking back from Jessica's house I saw one of my younger brothers walking down the ...
Thies, Senegal nrubinThough it is just past the winter solstice, which is supposed to be the shortest day of the year, mine has seemed to continue on interminably. I have yet to feel inspired to start writing, but I figure I might as well start before it's too late. I'm sitting on the terrace of L'Hôtel Massa Massa. This place reminds me of Nate's uncle's house on Cedar Island. The group has dwindled down to consist of Rob, Dan, Tyler and me, as we discuss the woes of structured papers. There is a ...
Thies, Senegal mafoleySo I know its been about a month since I last wrote so this is gonna be a long one so be warned and advised that a nice tall glass of iced tea and a lemon (wow I wish i had me some of that right now!) would be nice to have near by. Ok so at this moment Im located back in Thies for In-service training and so I'm with all my fellow PCV's again and its been really interesting to see how truly different each of our villages and therefore expereinces have been thus far ...

Pikine, Senegal claudinelabineNothing has been more satisfying in the past three months than when I handed in my 30-page independent study project... in FRENCH. A month of research seems like a long time, but as I mentioned in my last blog, the time has passed by so quickly. On Friday, I will leave for "la Petite Cote" or Mbour, which is a small, touristy beach town south of Dakar. Today was a landmark day in Senegal not only because of the end of my ...
Dakar, Senegal lilli466... up neon snowflakes adorned the walls, the only source of light in the place, flashing and doing light shows all night. The rest of Senegal is so blah, this was sensory overload, but unique. Heading back to the hotel, we passed the place to be on Saturday night. Western club beats and melodies overlaid with French or Wolof rap. Looked like a good time, but Donna's a bit old for party crashing and we were tired. Next --> Back to Dakar and the conclusion of travels
Thies, Senegal kally563... week the entire center will transition into only French speaking for the classes, and local dialects for outside communication. My french has improved for that reason, but also because my host family doesn't speak English. I was told last night that they were going to stop speaking french all together as well to give me maximum exposure to Pulaar. At lunch time all volunteers and trainers go to the lunch hut and eat together. There are about 8 large silver ...
